NEW ORLEANS – In recent years, the Fair Grounds Oaks has been on quite a run of producing Kentucky Oaks winners. Eight of the last 17 winners of the Fair Grounds Oaks went on to win the Kentucky Oaks. The list – Blushing K. D. (1997), Silverbulletday (1999), Ashado (2004), Summerly (2005), Proud Spell (2008), Rachel Alexandra (2009), Believe You Can (2012), and Untapable (2014) – includes five Eclipse Award-winning 3-year-old fillies (Silverbulletday, Ashado, Proud Spell, Rachel Alexandra, and Untapable). Rachel Alexandra also was Horse of the Year in 2009. Larry Jones, who trained Proud Spell and Believe You Can, appears to have a legitimate shot at scoring the Fair Grounds Oaks-Kentucky Oaks double for the third time. Jones is running the favorite, I’m a Chatterbox, in the Fair Grounds Oaks on Saturday, and that filly is widely considered one of the early favorites for the Kentucky Oaks. “This is probably the first time I had the Kentucky [Oaks] future-book favorite at this time of year,” Jones said. I’m a Chatterbox, a Munnings filly who won 1 of 3 starts as a 2-year-old when trained by Ken McPeek, is 2 for 2 as a 3-year-old under Jones. She won the Silverbulletday by eight lengths and the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra by 2 1/2. The latter race was run at the Fair Grounds Oaks distance of 1 1/16 miles. The $400,000, Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks drew eight fillies. I’m a Chatterbox will start from post 6. :: DRF Live: Get real-time updates and insights from DRF reporters and handicappers on Saturday Key contenders I’m a Chatterbox (Last 3 Beyers: 90-94-73) * The field isn’t loaded with early speed. It wouldn’t be surprising to see I’m a Chatterbox grab a stalking position behind the longshot Jungi, who was a pacesetter in four of her five dirt sprints and will be trying two turns for the first time. * I’m a Chatterbox possesses remarkable versatility. In the Silverbulletday, I’m a Chatterbox, who broke from the rail, led all the way. In the Rachel Alexandra, I’m a Chatterbox was in the 10 hole in a 10-filly field. She settled off a solid pace near the back of the pack before sweeping around rivals and launching a strong stretch run. “The only horse I had that could [show such diverse styles] was Havre de Grace,” Jones said. As a 4-year-old filly in 2011, Havre de Grace, trained by Jones, was Horse of the Year. Forever Unbridled (Last 3 Beyers: 85-80-79) * Trainer Dallas Stewart said Forever Unbridled has been improving steadily since she arrived in New Orleans last fall. She finished second in the Silverbulletday, eight lengths behind I’m a Chatterbox, and was third in the Rachel Alexandra, 2 3/4 lengths behind the winner. Forever Unbridled raced in midpack early in both races. * Her last workout, five furlongs in a bullet 1:00.60 last Saturday, was sharp, Stewart said. “I like the way her health is holding together, her condition,” he said. “She’s holding her weight.” * A daughter of Unbridled’s Song and Lemons Forever, who won the Kentucky Oaks in 2006 for Stewart, Forever Unbridled is a full sister to Unbridled Forever, who finished in the money in five graded races for him last year. She was third in the Fair Grounds Oaks and Kentucky Oaks. Shook Up (Last 3 Beyers: 79-84-93) * After routing maidens by 13 1/2 lengths in her second start, Shook Up had an uncomfortable trip along the inside in a first-level optional claimer in her next race. She finished second, 2 1/2 lengths behind Lovely Maria, who got away with a slow pace and is a classy filly. She ran second in the Rachel Alexandra in her next start. * Shook Up never threatened in the Rachel Alexandra and finished fifth. “She’s got a lot of talent,” trainer Steve Asmussen said. “I just don’t think she’s showing her best side yet.” * Asmussen is seeking his fourth Fair Grounds Oaks victory. His winners were Lady Tak in 2003, Summerly, and Untapable. Danette (Last 3 Beyers: 56-77-71) * Though this Keith Desormeaux trainee is a maiden heading into her 10th start, Danette has been competitive in Grade 1 races. She finished third in the Chandelier last year at Santa Anita, and in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies over that track, she was fifth, 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner, Take Charge Brandi. * With a come-from-behind style that generally doesn’t play well at Santa Anita, Danette might appreciate racing down the long Fair Grounds stretch.
