A couple of $75,000 one-mile turf stakes races for 3-year-olds share the spotlight Saturday at Gulfstream Park. Post time for the first of 11 races is 12:50 p.m. Eastern. Fillies are up first in the Honey Ryder, which drew eight horses and goes as race 4. Leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has strong chances with Honor D Lady and Violet Gibson. Honor D Lady is making her first start of the year and first on turf. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Honor Code won a maiden special weight race at Gulfstream in her second start and closed her 2-year-old campaign with a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Mazarine at Woodbine. Both races were contested over Tapeta. Her only sibling is Churchtown, who is a two-time winner on turf with one of the victories coming in the $135,000 Gio Ponti at Aqueduct last year. In his first start as a 4-year-old, Churchtown just missed in the $150,000 Appleton at Gulfstream. Honor D Lady will break from post 4 with Miguel Vasquez up. Violet Gibson was impressive winning her debut going 7 1/2 furlongs on the Gulfstream turf course. An Irish-bred daughter of Expert Eye, Violet Gibson appeared to be going nowhere on the stretch turn but surged late and got up to win by a head. Leonel Reyes will be aboard when she breaks from the outside post. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Post time is set for 5:49 p.m. Trainer Mark Casse is looking for an improved effort from Boppy O. A colt by Bolt d’Oro, Boppy O won the Grade 3 With Anticipation at Saratoga last year and is coming off a runner-up finish as the 4-5 favorite in the $100,000 Sophomore Turf at 1 1/16 miles for Florida-breds on March 26 at Tampa Bay. “He had a great trip, so I was a little disappointed that he didn’t win,” Casse said of the colt, who will be ridden by Edwin Gonzalez. “He’s been training with me at Ocala and he’s good right now. Edwin is 1 for 1 with him, so hopefully they can stay undefeated.” Swan Lake looks like the main threat. Trained by Elizabeth Dobles, Swan Lake set the pace before settling for third in the Sophomore Turf and then almost took them all the way going the same distance in a first-level allowance race with a $75,000 claiming option April 8 at Gulfstream. The son of Fort Loudon will break from post 8 with Edgar Perez up. Ticking, trained by Edward Plesa Jr., goes for the hat trick following a sharp score at seven furlongs on the main track in a first-level allowance race with a $75,000 claiming option March 16. The Florida-bred colt by Bold d’Oro is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Harpers First Ride, but none of the 22 combined wins from his five siblings came on turf. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
