HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Flamingo Way’s career has improved leaps and bounds since she switched to the turf at the beginning of her 2025 campaign. And she was arguably a clean trip away from becoming a stakes winner for the first time when finishing a troubled fourth behind Moon Spun in the Abundantia Stakes in her seasonal finale. Flamingo Way will have the opportunity to avenge that defeat when facing the heavily favored Moon Spun a second time Saturday at Gulfstream Park in the $125,000 Ladies’ Turf Sprint. The five-furlong grass fixture drew a field of eight and will be decided as the 10th event on a 12-race program that begins at 12:20 p.m. Flamingo Way made her first seven career starts on dirt or synthetic tracks before coming off an extended layoff to make her turf debut last summer at Penn National. She rallied from midpack to a convincing 2 1/4-length victory for trainer Philip Aristone. Flamingo Way was ultimately transferred by her owner, Joseph Imbesi, to trainer Guadalupe Preciado for the winter season and has continued to show improvement since arriving in South Florida. :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. The performance earned her a career-best 93 Beyer Speed Figure along with a ticket into the Abundantia eight weeks later. Flamingo Way broke a step slow in the Abundantia but moved within easy striking distance after cutting the corner into the stretch. She lost her momentum when forced to check behind the leaders near midstretch, ultimately finishing 1 1/2 lengths behind the 9-5 favorite Moon Spun. “I was a little surprised how well she ran the first time I started her here,” Preciado said. “And last time she ran well again, only she got in trouble at a point where it looked like she might win the race.” Preciado has reached out to veteran rider Joe Bravo to handle Flamingo Way for the first time on Saturday, although was not pleased after his filly drew the rail. “We’d rather have been in the middle, but Joe has breezed her three times already, he knows her well, and hopefully he’ll be able to get her off the rail,” Preciado said. “And I think with a better trip we can beat the favorite this time.” Like Flamingo Way, Moon Spun is in the best form of her career. She returned from a 13-month layoff here during the fall to also win a high-priced optional-claiming and allowance race in relatively easy fashion before hanging on for a game neck decision over Haulin Ice when making her stakes debut in the Abundantia. Moon Spun is trained by Brian Lynch, who has already won five turf stakes at the current meet. “She’s doing great,” Lynch said. “She seems to be on a little roll of her own. Her last work I thought was very impressive leading up to the race. She’s matured a lot. She’s a big, strong filly now.” :: Play Gulfstream Park with confidence! The remainder of the lineup includes Cart Girl Sam, runner-up in the Pan Zareta Stakes at Fair Grounds to close out her 2025 campaign on Nov. 29; Summer Cause, who is returning from a seven-month layoff for trainer Mark Casse; Choose Joy, an even running fifth in the Abundantia; along with last-out allowance winners Le Amazonia and Tree C’s Kai. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
