LEXINGTON, Ky. – Preparations for the North American breeding season are coming down to the wire, but there’s still time to pick up a broodmare or prospect. The Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale marks the last chance to do so at a public auction, just under the wire. The single-session sale is set for Monday, Feb. 9, at the company’s Newtown Paddocks headquarters in Lexington, less than 24 hours before many breeding sheds open. For example, Spendthrift Farm, which stands seven-time reigning leading sire Into Mischief, opens for business on Feb. 10. “Strategically positioned before the start of breeding season, Kentucky winter mixed is an important marketplace within our industry,” Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning Jr. said in a release. Fasig-Tipton initially cataloged 350 hips for the final mixed sale of the season that began last fall. Including supplemental entries as of the morning of Feb. 6, the catalog has grown to 411 hips. More than 200 recently turned yearlings are cataloged, representing a market segment that has helped fuel solid results during this mixed sale season. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Following a strong yearling marketplace in the summer and fall of 2025, the weanling market was scalding at the major November mixed sales and demand for this crop has continued through December and January. This February sale provides the final chance for end users to get ahead of what could continue to be a strong yearling marketplace later this year – or for pinhookers to pick up a young prospect to capitalize on in several months’ time. However, the broodmares and broodmare prospects will garner their fair share of attention at this final stop of the season, particularly by those looking to fill the books of new stallions to get them off to the strongest start possible. This could be especially important for a few stallions who have been retired only in the last two months, later than the traditional announcement window. Since December, the Kentucky stallion ranks added Grade 1 winner Goal Oriented (Spendthrift) and Grade 2 winner Barnes (Hill ‘n’ Dale) to the incoming class of 2026. A number of accomplished runners have retired regionally as well, with Grade 1 winner Mixto (Hidden Lake Farm) and graded stakes winner Mo Plex (Mountain View Farm) to New York, and graded stakes winners Fort Bragg (Robicheaux Ranch) and Hoist the Gold (Circle H Breeding and Racing) retired to stand in Louisiana. :: Get the Inside Track with the FREE DRF Morning Line Email Newsletter. The daughter of Twirling Candy won 4 of 5 career starts, highlighted by the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks and Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap, both in 2024. She did not race in 2025. The 5-year-old is now consigned as a broodmare prospect only by Taylor Made Sales as agent. “Iscreamuscream has everything a breeder could want in a broodmare prospect,” Taylor Made president and CEO Mark Taylor said in a release. “She’s by a perennial leading sire in Twirling Candy and a perfect fit for most of the elite stallions around the world. She’s going to be fun to sell.” At this end of the mixed sale season, Iscreamuscream offers one of the final opportunities to get into the book of one of the leading stallions in the country. Taylor Made is offering the mare with a pre-approved nomination to its stallion Not This Time, who is expected to be booked full as his fee rises to $250,000 in 2026. Not This Time finished second to Into Mischief on the 2025 North American general sires list and led both the 2-year-old and turf sire lists. He started 2026 off by sweeping a pair of 3-year-old stakes last weekend at Gulfstream Park, with Nearly stamping himself as a major Kentucky Derby prospect in the Grade 3 Holy Bull and On Time Girl winning the Grade 3 Forward Gal. “Iscreamuscream fits Not This Time like a glove,” Taylor said. “She matches up like many of the dams of his best runners, and she brings Candy Ride in on the pedigree side. We are holding a place in his book for the new owner.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
