DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026
:quality(75))
Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.
12:30 CNL 1st POLKA DOT JERSEY (#2, 9-2) will make her third start for Lauer and generally seems to be circling her way around a maiden victory; the filly earned a 68 Beyer after flashing more early speed last time out, withering just a tad at the end for third; Loveberry will stay in the saddle and they might have gotten the job done last timd if not for a duel for the lead; she has the experience edge. - Patrick Moquin | Get Past Performances for this race
12:50 MTH 1st MOONBLAZE (#2, 4-1) was behind I'MWISHINGONASTAR in that last run but the latter was able to shake loose and control the early tempo in that otherwise paceless sprint, while the former was victimized by that very same race flow and failed to run to her prior Beyer; expecting a much different pace scenario for this opener, and if the pace is quick and contested MOONBLAZE should be able to make more of an impact in the lane. - Kenny Peck | Get Past Performances for this race
1:00 GP 2nd WIN RUNNER (#3, 6-1) seems better on the green. That was a good effort off the layoff but what if this colt is better going short? Team De La Cerda are 22% going route to sprint. We spy a 373 distance Tomlinson that might also bode well. Class jump into special weights helps the price. - Scott Ehlers | Get Past Performances for this race
1:51 MTH 3rd PRISMATIC LIGHT (#7, 10-1) sports a couple of works that suggest he has some speed, and dam Alter Rhythm was a two-time sprint winner, albeit in dirt races; sire Rainbow Heir has done well with his turf sprinters, with his offspring generating a 41-11-4-2 (26%) record, and this colt doesn't meet the deepest of fields for his debut. - Kenny Peck | Get Past Performances for this race
2:31 SAR 4th Based on results, GIVE HER ANOTHER (#3, 10-1) appears to have spent a bit too much time on dirt for her prior connections. She sprinted on turf three times early in her career and ran well in all of those races while facing solid competition; was stretching out when finally back to the grass last time, where she could gain no late ground from the pocket and settled for a clear third behind recent NY-bred stakes winner Greyjoy; cuts back. - Mike Beer | Get Past Performances for this race
3:31 CNL 7th IF NOT FOR LUCK (#2, 6-1) will have to improve while switching back to turf for Chapman, but the 7-year-old showed a great deal when he ran third behind Rezasrolex in a $70,000 handicap on turf in July; he came back to win a synthetic starter/optional claiming race later that month; the key here is that he's a game closing type who could get the right sort of race here, as most of the contenders have a ton of early speed; he has closed successfully at five furlongs before and has done even better at 5 1/2. - Patrick Moquin | Get Past Performances for this race
3:36 WO 6th HER SEQUEL (#8, 10-1) is by the superb turf sire Liam's Map, the sire of current G1 winners Deterministic and Burnham Square. The $250K yearling purchase is the first foal from G1-placed dirt router and the second dam won on the lawn. - Ron Gierkink | Get Past Performances for this race
3:55 GP 7th SOROKIN (#5, 7-2) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get Past Performances for this race
4:16 SAR 7th ACOUSTIC AVE (#4, 8-1) lacks a winning profile so far in 2026, though his amazing run of consistency since the Rice claim last March continues, and he has run well in each of his last three starts since dropping out of a series of graded stakes races; getting back to six furlongs helps, and he can get any kind of trip in a race. -Mike Beer
4:51 SAR 8th ARINATA (#3, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Mike Beer). | Get Past Performances for this race
5:00 DMR 1st A decent runner-up finish by BORN TO ROCK (#4, 5-1) makes him the choice in this maiden-50 turf mile. 'ROCK was dropping from MSW to maiden-50, ran his final five-sixteenths in a solid :29.26, and missed by only a half-length. Likely winner if he runs two alike. - Brad Free | Get Past Performances for this race
5:40 GP 10th TURN AND RUN (#7, 12-1) is by a 7% debut turf sire. His dam never tried the green. Of 6 sibs to try the turf, 5 won and the outlier only tried it once. Three of those sibs beat winners on the sod and we count two sibs that won their turf debut. This horse should be more acclimated now with a local race under his belt. - Scott Ehlers | Get Past Performances for this race
6:03 DMR 3rd The longshot KING OF DRAGONS (#8, 15-1) is worth backing in this Cal-bred allowance turf route that sets up for his closing style. His last-out fifth-place finish was better than it looks. Last early, he uncorked a premature move, got hung wide while rallying on the far turn and into the stretch, then flattened out. Good race, actually. He switches jockeys after the bad trip, gets pace to flatter his closing kick, and can post a come-from-behind upset in a race with speed to run at. - Brad Free | Get Past Performances for this race
6:07 SAR 10th OZARA (#1, 8-1) is not Grade 1 calibre, and she has made three of her last five starts at that level to no avail; thought she ran well winning her return from the layoff at Monmouth, after which she had a no-chance trip up in Canada; loves Saratoga, and this is a much better spot for her as she moves to an inside post. - Mike Beer | Get Past Performances for this race
6:10 CBY 1st SHIMMERING JADE (#1, 5-1) is by a 13% debut turf sire. Her dam went 11-1-0-2 on the green and earned 45K. Two of five sibs won on the grass including a debut turf winner. We like that this filly has worked thrice since her debut and draws the rail. -Scott Ehlers
8:10 DMR 7th The longshot AMERICAN HOPE (#5, 8-1) can upset this N2X turf mile that has plenty of speed to flatter his closing rally. Since stretching back out this year, 'HOPE has improved (win, third, better-than-looked seventh). His last-start seventh in the Wickerr Stakes was better than it looks. The race was dominated by speed, 'HOPE lost ground while rallying wide, and ran his final quarter-mile in :22.39 to miss by only three lengths. This easier allowance has plenty of speed to set up his closing kick. The trainer-jockey combo of Brian Koriner and Joel Rosario is 5-for-9 this year. - Brad Free | Get Past Performances for this race
8:10 CBY 5th INDIE FREEDOM (#7, 6-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get Past Performances for this race
8:15 RP 1st JOEWILLY (#5, 8-1) did well to close for the place in that last one after getting away slowly, rallying between horses and galloping out well past the wire; he was flattered when the odds-on winner, Hollywood Icon, returned to win with a 63 Beyer and the race yielded another winner when 4th-place finisher Tiz Ticktok came back to win, with a figure of 51. -Kenny Peck | Get Past Performances for this race
9:07 RP 3rd MISS SUNDAZE (#6, 8-1) has shown a decent late kick in recent tries; that inflated Beyer two back was directly due to a very favorable closer-friendly race flow (note the inverted "C" symbol in the PP line, indicating an extreme example) but she may get the same kind of set up tonight, as there's a fair amount of early zip in this field. - Kenny Peck | Get Past Performances for this race
9:10 CBY 7th COBBLESTONE BRIDGE (#3, 5-1) has lost as the favorite in three of his last four starts. He still ran well in all of those. His price improves today and this guy could be third or fourth choice on the tote. He should stalk a soft pace today. You know that he didn't get a clean trip last out, right? - Scott Ehlers | Get Past Performances for this race
11:43 RP 9th DOUBLECENTS (#4, 12-1) didn't run particularly well in that optional claimer at Churchill Downs last time out but the sloppy track provides a convenient excuse; prior Beyers plenty good enough to win this and it seems like a good bet he'll rebound in his local debut, assuming he gets a fast track. - Kenny Peck | Get Past Performances for this race
12:35 RP 11th TUCKER FLATS (#7, 20-1) had pace excuses in each of his last two starts and he may have been overmatched in that allowance try three back; he'll be a big price in this nightcap but he does have license to improve at this reduced level, especially if he gets a favorable race flow. - Kenny Peck | Get Past Performances for this race
