Trainer Brad Cox, who seems flush with 3-year-old prospects this year, is pointing impressive maiden winner Cannoneer to the Grade 3, $250,000 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 31, and Commandment, winner of the Mucho Macho Man Stakes, to the Grade 2, $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes on Feb. 28. Cannoneer, a son of Into Mischief, won a seven-furlong maiden race by 7 1/4 lengths on Nov. 29 at Churchill Downs, earning a 90 Beyer. That was his second career start after he finished third going 5 1/2 furlongs in his debut at Churchill on June 1. “After he ran third we backed off him and he came back a better version of himself off the layoff,” Cox said. “He ran the way he always trained, real talented, a real good work horse.” Cannoneer has worked three times at Payson Park and is expected to have his final breeze for the Holy Bull on Friday or Saturday. Commandment, a son of Into Mischief, won the Mucho Macho Man by 6 1/4 lengths at Gulfstream on Jan. 3. That came two months after he won his maiden by 5 1/4 lengths going seven furlongs on Nov. 1 at Churchill in his second career start. Cox said that Commandment was likely to return to the work tab over the weekend at Payson Park. :: Play Gulfstream Park with confidence!
