While Bob Baffert has two horses in the Kentucky Derby, he is already contemplating a different horse for the Preakness and is using an allowance race at Aqueduct Sunday as a potential prep. Cornucopian, a dazzling debut winner at Oaklawn who got used up in a pace duel while finishing fourth in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, is entered in a first-level allowance scheduled for one mile. Baffert had thought about a first-level allowance going 1 1/16 miles on the Kentucky Derby undercard, but he liked the extra six days Sunday’s race affords him should he run well enough to move on to the Preakness. “I would have preferred a two-turn race for him, [but] if we run him there, it gives him an extra week if we’re going to the Preakness,” Baffert said. “We didn’t really learn anything last time he ran.” In the Arkansas Derby, Cornucopian’s second start, he got involved in a protracted speed duel – the half-mile went in 45.21 seconds – and ended up finishing fourth, 8 1/2 lengths behind Sandman. “He’s got a lot of speed. I hope he didn’t get speed-crazy after that last race,” Baffert said. “He’s got a good mind.” Irad Ortiz Jr. is named to ride. :: DRF Kentucky Derby Package: Save on PPs, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more. Sand Devil and Garamond, the second- and third-place finishers from the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes on March 1, are entered in this spot. Sand Devil, trained by Linda Rice, is shortening back to one turn after finishing sixth in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial at 1 1/8 miles. Garamond, trained by Brown, came out of the Gotham with a foot issue, which is why he didn’t make the Wood Memorial. Prior to his third in the Gotham, he won his debut sprinting at Tampa Bay Downs. Brown also entered Keewaydin, who hasn’t run since finishing fifth in the Grade 2 Remsen last Dec. 7. Trainer Rick Dutrow has entered Ican, fourth in the Jimmy Winkfield, and Toga d’Oro, who gets blinkers and Lasix for the first time after running fifth in this condition on April 6. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
