Keeneland’s November breeding stock sale rolled into its eighth day Monday off of heady gains all last week, though the Monday session had yet to produce a six-figure horse by 3 p.m.
GoldMark Farm’s two-time graded winner Backtalk has retired from the racetrack and will begin his stud career at Vinery’s Florida farm. The 4-year-old Smarty Jones colt will stand for $3,500.
B. Wayne Hughes’s Spendthrift Farm, which adds seven new stallions to its roster this year, has raised the fee for its signature stallion, Malibu Moon, from $60,000 to $70,000.
Keeneland’s 11-day November breeding stock sale continued its strong upward trend Sunday at its seventh session, with more hefty gains in all categories and a $190,000 racing or broodmare prospect the day’s high point. Castleton Lyons purchased the session-topper, the 3-year-old Unbridled’s Song filly Sanadaat, a half-sister to stakes winners Super Frolic and Stormy Frolic.
A weanling Street Sense colt, a half-brother to graded winner Richbabe, brought the sixth session’s top price of $250,000 in the last minutes of the auction Saturda during Keeneland's November mixed sale. Vail Equine bought the April 4 foal, a bay colt, from Dapple Stud’s agency.
WinStar Farm is holding the line on all but one of its stud fees for the 2012 breeding season. Ken Troutt’s breeding farm near Versailles, Ky., will double Bellamy Road’s stud fee from $10,000 to $20,000.
Vinery, which stands stallions in Kentucky, Florida, and New York, has announced its stud fees for the 2012 breeding season.
Keeneland’s November breeding stock sale posted a fifth consecutive day of dramatic gains across the board Friday at its fifth of 11 sessions. And, once again, it was a horse from the late Ned Evans’s Spring Hill consignment featured prominently. This time, a $510,000 Quiet American weanling, a full sister to the dam of 2005 Horse of the Year Saint Liam, topped the session.
Ashford Stud has put a $35,000 stud fee on 2010 juvenile champion Uncle Mo for his first year at stud.
Victor’s Cry, winner of last year’s Shoemaker Mile, and 2011 Indiana Derby winner Wilburn have retired from racing and will enter stud next year. B. Wayne Hughes’s Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., has bought both. Hughes will stand Wilburn at his farm but will stand Victor’s Cry at Michael Byrne’s Park Stud in Canada.
