Having a famous Thoroughbred ambassador is a source of pride for Magali Farms, but it is not the farm’s main objective. Farm manager Tom Hudson and the rest of the Magali team are hoping that Giacomo is also well-received by California mare owners in the upcoming breeding season.
The list of stallions joining the ranks of California’s breeding farms for 2012 has created a buzz. It is not often that new bloodlines at the state’s breeding farms include a Kentucky Derby winner – 2005 winner Giacomo, bound for Magali Farms – or a Grade 1 winner – Heatseeker, on his way to Harris Farms. Both horses stood at farms in Kentucky in 2011 and are part of a group of 16 stallions beginning their stud careers or standing in the state for the first time in 2012.
Gretchen and Roy Jackson, who race under the name Lael Stables, have donated $150,000 to the Belmont Child Care Association, which runs the Anna House day-care center at Belmont Park in New York. One-hundred thousand dollars of the donation will go to the Lael Stable Fund, a program administered by the child-care association to provide early childhood education to the children of backstretch workers at New York tracks, and the remaining $50,000 had been earmarked for the association's general fund. . . .
Bertrando, a five-time leading sire in California with 53 career stakes winners, has been retired and will be pensioned at River Edge Farm.
Highcliff Farm in Delanson, N. Y., will host the third and final phase of the Flying Zee Stable dispersal on Jan. 21.
Three Thoroughbred retirement programs have joined forces to permanently retire a pair of former claiming horses: a son of Ferdinand, the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner who died in a Japanese slaughterhouse, and a runner who started 125 times.
The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company has cataloged 530 horses to its Jan. 17-18 winter mixed sale in Ocala, Fla. Hip Nos. 1-110 will sell Jan. 17 in a consignor-preferred session, followed by 148 horses in a new horses of racing age session the same day. An open session will take place Jan. 18.
