KEENELAND Weather: Cloudy Temperature: 46 Track: Fast Turf: Good LEXINGTON, Ky. – Two year olds dominated Friday’s Breeders’ Cup work tab at Keeneland with their respective races now just a week away. The group was led by leading Juvenile Fillies contender WONDER WHEEL and a quartet of trainer Todd Pletcher juveniles breezing in sets immediately after both the first and second renovation breaks. However, the most prominent name on the morning’s tab was that of GOLDEN PAL, the defending Turf Sprint champion, who breezed over a grass course officially listed as good but which, in reality, may have been a little south of that with plenty of cut in the ground and kickback in the air. Wonder Wheel, as usual, was among the first horses on the track, wasting little time getting down to business, completing an easy half-mile in 25.07 seconds and 48.89 before galloping out five-eighths in 1:02.15. Wonder Wheel, who had her major work for the Juvenile Fillies here last Friday, has made a good impression and seems to be thriving exiting her game victory over this track in the Alcibiades. Only two other potential Breeders’ Cup starters worked prior to the first renovation break, MO STASH (Juvenile Turf Sprint) and BE YOUR BEST (Juvenile Fillies Turf). Mo Stash was given a target and went well working over the main track, breaking off nearly seven lengths behind his mate before readily making up the ground and holding a slight edge to the wire after five furlongs in 36.66 and 1:00.69. He galloped out willingly enough, easing up after three-quarters in 1:14.40. :: Get access to Breeders' Cup Clocker Reports with our special VIP Package and save off the retail price. Be Your Best was more in maintenance mode, cruising an easy half-mile in 26.40 and 50.57, picking up the pace some at the end without undue pressure. Dawn had not quite broken when the Pletcher duo of FORTE and LOST ARK, both of whom are being pointed to the Juvenile, went four furlongs in 24.49 and 48.81, each lightly urged to finish before sustaining good momentum on the gallop-out, easing up after a full three-quarters in 1:14.74. The pair led a group of more than a half-dozen Breeders’ Cup hopefuls to work in semi-darkness within minutes of one another after the initial break. That group was topped by Breeders Cup Challenge winner (Phoenix) and Sprint outsider MANNY WAH, who zipped a half in 22.94 and 47.41 before easing up very quickly within a sixteenth of a mile after completing his drill. Pletcher was back again after the second break with the pairing of CHOCOLATE GELATO and ATOMICALLY, who only recently joined his barn after being purchased privately following her one-sided victory in Gulfstream Park’s 1 1/16-mile My Dear Girl Stakes. :: Breeders' Cup Pre-Entry PPs Now Available - Exclusively with a BC Package The two fillies crawled away from the half-mile pole, completing a maintenance-like half-mile in 50.11, then did arguably their best running during the gallop-out, shading 26 going another quarter-mile around the sweeping clubhouse turn. Trainer Chad Brown also had a couple of promising youngsters, RAGING SEA and FREE LOOK, out for their final preps for the Juvenile Fillies and Juvenile Fillies Turf, respectively. They put in an easy half-mile in 24.93 and 48.69, both finishing well while never asked for their best at any point in typical fashion for the barn. SLAMMED, Florent Geroux up, looked just average during the latter stages of her final prep for the Filly and Mare Sprint, covering five panels in 36.64 and 1:01.77, and out in 1:15.59. Golden Pal, as is the case with most Wesley Ward workers, was primed and ready to go the moment the turf course opened for business at 10 a.m., cruising five furlongs over the soft going in 38.99 and 1:04.08 before easing up on the gallop-out after just two-minute licking here over firmer ground a week earlier. :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2022: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division The Jonathan Thomas pairing of 2-year-old fillies DELIGHT and BORN DAPPER were impressive despite a somewhat misleading 52.31 final half-mile clocking, the duo barely out of an open gallop to the top of the stretch (29.01) before finishing strong on their own accord and sustaining that momentum continuing into and around the clubhouse turn. BRAN (Turf Sprint), on the other hand, was set down to finish, responding with a 23.01 final quarter while completing a bullet 48.79 half-mile around the very wide dogs while also continuing out with plenty of energy on the gallop-out. Most of the final preps for the main event, the Classic, are scheduled for Saturday, and both LIFE IS GOOD and HOT ROD CHARLIE saved their energy for the occasion when out for just a leisurely stroll this morning, Life Is Good barely going more than a mile before easing up into the clubhouse turn. FLIGHTLINE, in contrast, was back to his usual self after having a relatively easy day Thursday. He was full of run throughout while near the middle of the track while posting a couple of 14-and-change final splits just for good measure before pulling up down the backstretch. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
