KEENELAND Weather: Partly cloudy   Main track: Fast  Turf: Firm  Temperature: 55  LEXINGTON, KY. - Saturday morning was hectic at Keeneland from the time the track opened for training at 5:30 a.m. until the final team, the Chad Brown duo of ROUGIR and REGAL GLORY, breezed over the turf nearly five hours later.  Nearly two-dozen potential Breeders’ Cup candidates blended with the general population on a tab that, combining turf and dirt workers, exceeded 200 horses. The cold temperatures of the previous several mornings were tempered somewhat with the main track remaining fast, the turf firm, and the dogs well out on the course again, which somewhat skewed the final times of all grass workers. The biggest name on the massive tab was Breeders’ Cup Classic-bound HOT ROD CHARLIE, who was given the 2-year-old maiden Chrome Desert as a target immediately after the second renovation break.  Breaking nearly five lengths behind at the five-furlong marker, Hot Rod Charlie gradually edged closer around the turn, got within a half-length after posting a 36.01 three-eighths split, joined his partner upon settling in the stretch and then readily drew well clear of his over-matched mate going easily to the wire in 1:00.75. “Charlie” continued out willingly enough under some mild prodding from jockey Tyler Gaffalione, easing up after a full seven panels in 1:27.20. Nothing spectacular, but it left a favorable impression in this almost maintenance-like drill, his second since winning the Lukas Classic three weeks earlier. Hot Rod Charlie was the last of several potential Breeders’ Cup runners from trainer Doug O’Neill’s barn to work here Saturday, the others going out in the dark prior to the renovation break. Dirt Mile-bound SLOW DOWN ANDY had the multiple graded stakes-placed 3-year-old Awake at Midnyte to lead the way, breaking several lengths back before edging a couple clear after five furlongs in 36.11, 1:00.51, and galloping out in average fashion, three-quarters in 1:15.93. :: Get access to Breeders' Cup Clocker Reports with our special VIP Package and save off the retail price. Likewise Juvenile Fillies candidate VEGAS MAGIC was able to target mate Big Hat Willie from the five-furlong marker, ultimately dominating the drill en route to a  35.70, 1:01.12 final clocking, out 1:14.65.  It was a busy morning for trainer Chad Brown who sent out nearly a dozen probable Breeders’ Cup starters over the dirt and turf. The group was led by the Sprint-bound JACK CHRISTOPHER and key Distaff contender SEARCH RESULTS. Jack Christopher was not far behind Hot Rod Charlie coming out of the second break while paired with the promising 2-year-old BLAZING SEVENS, who held his own and then some working with his older and vastly more accomplished mate. The team breezed five furlongs on even terms in 36.53, 1:00.45, neither being asked for their best to finish before galloping out three-quarters in 1:13.44, with the G1 Champagne winner Blazing Sevens actually appearing to hold the edge running out into the bend inside Jack Christopher, whose rider had to prod him a bit to keep pace at the end. Search Results was slated to work solo but inadvertently hooked in with a Brad Cox trainee shortly after leaving the five-eighths pole, breaking two lengths behind and finishing with her head in front. The pair coasted along during the early stages, Search Results posting splits of 26.03 and 39.05 for her opening three-eighths before picking up the pace and completing the distance in 1:02.92, then ultimately dominating the gallop-out while full of run into and around the turn under light encouragement. Much better than the final time indicates. The team of RAGING SEA (Juvenile Fillies) and I’M VERY BUSY (Juvenile Turf) pretty much matched strides on the main track, breezing a half in 24.60 48.39, the former hard held while sticking her head in front to the wire before continuing out slightly best in 1:01.89. REGAL GLORY, among the top candidates in the Mile, and ROUGIR, game winner of the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor just two weeks earlier, were last but certainly not least of the turf workers this morning, finishing full of run then sustaining that energy on the gallop out turning in yet another “better than it looks on paper” final time 49.48, with the duo continuing five-eighths in 1:02.38 into the clubhouse turn. Other Brown grass workers this morning included the team of DOMESTIC SPENDING (Mile) and VIRGINIA JOY (Filly and Mare Turf), who cruised five furlongs in 1:01.67, Domestic Spending best of the pair while widest into the turn on the gallop out before being asked to do a bit more than his mate continuing a full seven panels around the bend. Also, IN ITALIAN went solo from the half in an easy and leisurely 50.17, finishing strong after cruising through a pedestrian 27.61 opening-quarter split. It was total maintenance for the red-hot, now multiple Grade 1 winner. Defending Turf Sprint winner GOLDEN PAL came out on the course this morning but merely to stretch his legs, a two-minute licking from the five-eighths pole to the wire.    :: BREEDERS’ CUP 2022: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more for each division SIMPLIFICATION (Dirt Mile), a better-than-average work horse for much of the season, went a solo five furlongs in 36.44 1:00.31 out 1:13.40 up 1:27.32, solid for the morning but not nearly as eye-catching as some of his pre-Kentucky Derby drills at Gulfstream Park during the spring. South Florida-based trainer Jorge Delgado was on hand to watch his two Breeders’ Cup hopefuls breeze. WILLIE BOI (Sprint) coasted away from the half-mile pole before finishing strong, shading :24 for the final quarter of an easy 50.18 half-mile, up in 1:02.81. His undefeated 2-year-old mate AWESOME STRONG (Juvenile) actually worked five-eighths from the half, set down to the wire and out into the turn going in average looking 25.71, 49.82 1:02.94. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
