Each week in this space, the top Beyer performances by maiden winners will be featured and analyzed. Click here for a complete archive. Leslie's Rose Nov. 19, 1st race Aqueduct, MdSpWt85k  Beyer: 91  6 1/2 furlongs 1:16.73 – 1st by 9 1/4 lengths  b.f.2, Into Mischief – Wildwood Rose, by Galileo  Noteworthy siblings: None  Auctions: Keeneland September yearling 2022 – $1,150,000  Owner: Whisper Hill Farm  Trainer: Todd Pletcher  Breeder: John Gunther and Eurowest Services  Either this filly didn’t show great spark in the morning, or her ability was kept close to the vest by those who regularly have seen her train: A seven-figure yearling ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. for Todd Pletcher who earns a 91 debut Beyer is not supposed to be a 9-2 shot. She broke sharply from the rail and went to the lead, setting a controlled tempo while well in hand down the backstretch and around the turn, a pace rival (the favorite) applying mild pressure. The fireworks started at about the quarter pole, where Ortiz turned Leslie’s Rose loose. The filly responded with immediate and impressive acceleration for a dirt horse. You will not see a smoother lead change, and Leslie’s Rose was long gone before the furlong grounds, leaving some decent foes reeling behind her. She has the appearance of a very refined filly who moves efficiently and sweetly, and from her finish, gallop-out, and pedigree there’s every reason to think she’ll route. She’s the second foal to race from an unraced dam who’s a sister to graded stakes winners Annapolis and My Miss Sophia.  Carbone Nov. 19, 7th race Churchill, MdSpWt125k  Beyer: 83  6 furlongs 1:09.84 – 1st by 8 lengths  b.c.2, Mitole – Treasure in Heaven, by Street Sense  Noteworthy siblings: None  Auctions: None  Owner: William and Corinne Heiligbrodt  Trainer: Steve Asmussen  Breeder: William and Corinne Heiligbrodt  The Churchill main track almost certainly was speed favoring and probably played fast during the Nov. 19 card. As for the speed of the track, race 2 was very quick for the class level, though several other sprints went in more standard times, and Carbone’s speed figure seems like it’s on the lower end of the plausible range. This colt was visually impressive from start to finish, breaking on top and setting a strong pace while traveling comfortably. He switched leads professionally and did something very encouraging, turning in the 10-runner field’s fastest final furlong 12.21, after also being fastest during the early stages. It is worth noting that the jockey rode the colt hard to the wire, asking his mount even after the outcome had been determined, a circumstance that in part accounts for a strong gallop-out all the way around the clubhouse turn. It’s far from certain that the gallop-out was predictive regarding how far Carbone wants to run; a bunch of female-line sires on the tail of his pedigree strongly suggest a one-turn horse.   Waskesiu Nov. 18, 8th race Aqueduct, MdSpWt85k  Beyer: 79  1 1/16 miles turf 1:42.35 – 1st by 4 1/2 lengths  b.f.2, American Pharoah – Finn’s Girl, by Bernardini  Noteworthy siblings: Collective Force (Tiznow, foaled 2020) – graded stakes-placed, $180k earnings  Auctions: None  Owner: Chiefswood Stable  Trainer: Bill Mott  Breeder: Chiesfwood Stable  This is a stout, hearty-looking filly who found her calling in a turf route after two solid dirt sprints during the Saratoga meet. She did get a perfect trip here but made the most of it, finishing fastest in a 12-runner field and getting her last half-furlong in 5.88 despite being geared down in the final strides. Waskesiu broke just fine and took up a tracking position in second behind a loose leader who set modest splits and wound up hanging around for second while finishing more than four lengths clear of third. Waskesiu looks like a filly who will get nine furlongs and beyond, and the 79 Beyer is within hailing range of the 85 put up by Hard to Justify winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.  Matanzas Creek  Nov. 19, 4th race Del Mar, MdSpWt61k  Beyer: 96  6 furlongs 1:09.09 – 1st by 2 1/4 lengths  b.c.3, Empire Maker – Cuvee Uncorked, by Cuvee  Noteworthy siblings: None  Auctions: Keeneland September yearling 2021 – $75,000  Owner: SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Robert Masterson, Stonestreet  Trainer: Tim Yakteen  Breeder: Betz / Burns / Kidder / Cole / D. J. Stable / Empire Maker Syndicate  It takes a big number to make this list as a November 3-year-old. The 96 qualifies as such, but we’ll have to see how the figure stands up. Matanzas Creek was one of just five runners in this field and he was one of two with a previous start. The other was third-place Devilish Desire, who had gotten a 73 debut Beyer that jumped to an 89 here. Matanzas Creek went from a 68 in his first start to a 96, and this field wasn’t especially spread out at the finish – maybe the race truly was especially fast, but maybe not. Matanzas Creek didn’t fetch much at auction and posted his first published work way back in May 2022, a stop-and-start breeze pattern finally leading to an actual race Oct. 22. Here, he broke on top and showed a nice upper-stretch burst to go clear, getting his final quarter-mile in an encouraging 23.40.
