Her World
Aug. 7, 12th race Monmouth, Tyro104k
Beyer: 72
5f 56.62 – 1st by 6 lengths
b. f. 2, Caravaggio – Mundus Novus, by Unbridled’s Song
Noteworthy siblings: Consort (Lope de Vega) – Group 1-placed
Auctions: Keeneland September yearling 2020 - $400,000
Owner: Andrew Farm, Susan Moulton, For the People Racing Stable, Windmill Manor
Trainer: Wesley Ward
Breeder: Lynch Bages Ltd & Rhinestone Bloodstock
Trainer Wesley Ward had the fast Chi Town Lady entered in Monmouth’s Tyro Stakes but scratched her in favor of this first-time starter, a filly facing experienced males in her debut. No contest – Her World jumped to the lead and laughed at her rivals. Racing in blinkers, she ran fast but at a controlled tempo, going easily even as she drew away from the competition in upper stretch, jockey Paco Lopez gearing Her World down the final half-furlong in a performance that outshined the figure. Ward, even before she raced, called Her World his best 2-year-old of 2021 – pretty high praise. From the first crop of Caravaggio, who is by Scat Daddy and off to a strong start at stud. Her World was his first American winner and likely shows up at Keeneland in October on the way to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.
Stellar Tap
Aug. 7, 5th race Saratoga, MdSpWt100k
Beyer: 78
7f 1:23.82 – 1st by 5 1/4 lengths
gr. c. 2, Tapit – Gioia Stella, by Medaglia d’Oro
Auctions: Keeneland November breeding 2019 - $385,000 (RNA); Keeneland September yearling 2020 - $250,000
Owner: L & N Racing and Winchell Thoroughbreds
Trainer: Steve Asmussen
Breeder: Moyglare Stud Farm
Whatever happens from here, he’s famous as Steve Asmussen’s 9,446th career winner, making him the most prolific winning trainer in American racing history. Nice colt, too. Wearing blinkers, he jumped right into the race, pressing 6-5 favorite Brigadier General, wearing him down at the quarter pole, and running away from this bunch for a clear victory. Changed leads well enough but did cock his head toward the stands, holding it higher than ideal while ,coming home with his ears pinned – all potentially meaningless, but duly noted here. Galloped out with good energy and on pedigree should go two turns, which you kind of expect of a well-bred horse who debuts at seven furlongs. First foal to race from dam, who was an allowance class turf-route horse, same as her mum.
Freelancer
Aug. 8, 5th race Ellis Park, MdSpWt51k
Beyer: 80
6f 1:09.79 – 1st by 2 3/4 lengths
b. c. 2, Medaglia d’Oro – Libreta, by Girolamo
Owner: Godolphin
Trainer: Brendan Walsh
Breeder: Godolphin
Godolphin homebred colt managed to go off a 16-1 in his debut – “they” definitely did not know. And he hardly fell into this victory, disputing a solid pace while racing outside his speed rival. Put away the other pace and easily held at bay a run from the odds-on Brad Cox-trained favorite. If he felt the stick at all, it was no more than a half-tap at the three-sixteenths pole as Freelancer was speeding away. Nothing special on the gallop-out, but why would there have been, since he’d won this in upper stretch. First foal to race from a New York Stallion Stakes winner who seemed to like something around seven furlongs best. Plenty of turf-stakes runners also crop up on the dam’s side.
McKulick
Aug. 8, 2nd race Saratoga, MdSpWt100k
Beyer: 73
1 1/16M turf 1:42.60 – 1st by 1 1/2 lengths
b. c. 2, Frankel – Astrelle, by Makfi
Noteworthy siblings: Fearless King (Kingman) – G2 winner; Just Beautiful (Pride of Dubai) – 4-5 wins
Auctions: Tattersalls October yearlings 2020 - $262,900
Owner: Klaravich Stables
Trainer: Chad Brown
Breeder: Essafinaat UK
First-time starter in a turf-route maiden wasn’t dazzling, but still liked the performance. Settled mid-pack, came wide on the turn to reach contention, was put to pretty heavy pressure to make the front, but that was more just to get an unraced colt’s engine revved than anything to do with him reaching full capacity. In fact, the best part of his race was the final furlong and the gallop-out, when McKulick seemed to belatedly grasp what was being asked of him, finally extending himself. He moves like an immature horse who should grow into himself. Third foal to race from dam whose first two could run; Fearless King won the German 2000 Guineas. Stamina will be no concern here.
Dripping Gold
Aug. 7, 1st race Saratoga, MdSpWt100k
Beyer: 73
1 1/16M turf 1:44.28 – 1st by 2 1/4 lengths
b. c. 2, Lemon Drop Kid – Aurelia, by Danzig
Noteworthy siblings: Aurelia’s Belle (Lemon Drop Kid) – multiple graded-stakes winner, $346K earnings
Auctions: Keeneland September yearling 2020 - $80,000; OBS March 2021 - $300,000
Owner: West Point Thoroughbreds, John Ballantyne, Titletown Thoroughbreds
Trainer: Shug McGaughey
Breeder: Alexander – Groves Thoroughbreds
Got a perfect trip, racing just behind the leader and finding room at the five-sixteenths for a clean run to the wire, but made the most of it in an easy victory. Powerful-looking colt who has the stride rhythm of a horse who will run as far as needed. Trainer McGaughey got this horse after the colt was purchased earlier this year and was an obvious choice as a trainer since he handled so many black-type horses back in this strong female family. Plenty of dirt in the pedigree, too, and wouldn’t be surprised to see him given a look on the main track at some point.
Dream Lith
Aug. 8, 6th race Saratoga, MdSpWt100k
Beyer: 76
6.5f 1:17.72 – 1st of 8 by 2 1/4 lengths
b. f. 2, Medaglia d’Oro – El Sueno, by Street Cry
Auctions: Fasig-Tipton fall mixed 2019 - $590,000 (RNA)
Owner: Cypress Creek Equine and Arnold Bennewith
Trainer: Robertino Diodoro
Breeder: Southern Equine Stables
Nothing close to a fast work showing, which is why she went off a 36-1 on debut. Favored Popular Vote stumbled badly at the start, rushing outside before the half-mile pole to contest the lead and in so doing slightly shuffling back Dream Lith, who had broken all right and taken up an outside stalking position. Dream Lith was wheeled outside the two leaders at the quarter pole but had a horse on her outside moving simultaneously, but she wasn’t fazed by all the company, thrumming away with decent-sized strides to open daylight through the final furlong. Wasn’t allowed to gallop out much and did appear to win with something in the tank. Stride rhythm of a filly who will run longer. Dam was a four-race maiden out of Mi Sueno, a G1 winner whose dam, Madcap Escapade, also was a G1 winner.
Montebello
Aug. 7, 4th race Del Mar, MdSpWt70k
Beyer: 73
6f 1:11.53 – 1st by a head
b. c. 2, Curlin – Beautiful But Blue, by El Corredor
Auctions: Keeneland September yearling 2020 - $400,000
Owner: SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Robert Masterson, Stonestreet Stables, Jay Schoenfarber, Waves Edge Capital, Catherine Donovan, Golconda Stable, Siena Farm
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Breeder: Chester Broman and Mary Broman
Barely made the Beyer cutoff, and the runner-up, Flying Drummer, almost caught him and galloped out on front. But it’s a robust looking Baffert first-timer who did fetch $400K at auction, so we’ll include him just in case. Showed speed from the rail and was green in his lead change. Could have more to find – and needs to if he’s a player.
Mystic Eyes
Aug. 5, 1st race Saratoga, MdSpWt80k
Beyer: 77
5.5f turf 1:03.60 – 1st by 4 1/2 lengths
b. f. 2, Maclean’s Music – Cloudburst, by Storm Cat
Auctions: Keeneland September yearling 2019 - $40,000
Owner: MeB Racing Stables and Vincent Esopi
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Breeder: Pursuit of Success
Odds-on favorite in debut went straight to the lead from post 1 and never came close to being hooked, much less caught. Won under minimal encouragement, obvious assets being she’s fleet and quick, while not looking much like a route horse at this point. This was one of those maiden special weight races with a sales-price cap on it, $45,000 in this case, and have to say that so far, those races generally have hewed to expectations, producing less than the best maiden winners.
