ELMONT, N.Y. – This year’s Triple Crown is such that jockey John Velazquez may ultimately learn he no longer was on the Kentucky Derby winner, but heading into next Saturday’s $1.5 million Belmont Stakes, he’ll find himself on the Preakness winner. Velazquez guided Medina Spirit to a one-length victory in the May 1 Kentucky Derby. However, that victory is in jeopardy following a first positive test for the medication betamethasone. Should a second test confirm the presence of that drug, it is likely Medina Spirit will be disqualified from the Derby victory. Medina Spirit, with Velazquez aboard, finished third behind Rombauer in the Preakness Stakes on May 15. Flavien Prat rode Rombauer to that victory. But before that, he rode Hot Rod Charlie to a third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, and gave the colt’s connections a commitment to ride him in the Belmont. :: DRF's Belmont Stakes Headquarters: Contenders, latest news, past performances, analysis, and more When Medina Spirit returned to California after the Preakness and the connections of Kentucky Oaks winner Malathaat opted to skip the Belmont, Velazquez became open, and the connections of Rombauer scooped him up. On Friday morning, Velazquez got acquainted with Rombauer by guiding him through a half-mile workout in 50.32 seconds over the Belmont Park main track. Rombauer, who started about a half-length off the Jonathan Thomas-trained claimer That Quality, went his opening quarter in 25.67 seconds and came home in 24.65 seconds while finishing about a neck in front. He galloped out five furlongs in 1:03.07 and six furlongs in 1:16.21 while going away from the other horse. “Very nice, he did everything very, very handy,” Velazquez said afterward. “He galloped out really, really well. Couldn’t ask for anything better than that.” Traihner Michael McCarthy said he was happy to have Rombauer get acquainted with Belmont and Velazquez on Friday morning. “I want the horse to see the nuances of Belmont Park and have something to go ahead and follow,” McCarthy said. “Grateful that Jonathan had something we could go ahead and piggy back off of. He seemed like he was full of himself through the lane. Johnny said he was very straightforward, got over the surface well. That’s all I was looking for.” McCarthy said that while he would have liked to have kept the continuity of Prat on Rombauer, he was “over the moon” to get Velazquez, who has won two Belmonts and will be riding in the race for the 25th time next Saturday. “Belmont is his home track for umpteen years,” McCarthy said. “It’s not often you win a classic and you need to find a jockey afterwards, but I’m happy with where we’re at. I hope everybody else is happy with their decision.” Velazquez is happy to have a Belmont mount. He opts not to think about losing a potential Kentucky Derby victory. “It’s out of my hands,” he said. “There’s nothing that I can do. I did my job, the rest is history.” Pletcher trio breezes Shortly after Rombauer worked, trainer Todd Pletcher sent out his trio of Belmont Stakes contenders through their final workouts. Known Agenda, working with 2020 Belmont Stakes runner-up Dr Post, went five furlongs in 1:01.08,according to DRF clocker Mike Welsch, in a work that became a little more eventful than perhaps planned. The pair followed a set of workers trained by Mark Hennig. Known Agenda, under Irad Ortiz Jr., and Dr Post, under exercise rider Hector Ramos, got so close to that pair in the lane that they both took some dirt. Dr Post took more dirt than Known Agenda, who was kept in a clear path by Ortiz. The pair came home in 24.82 seconds, and on the gallop-out Ortiz wound up splitting the Hennig pair and went out in 1:13.90, according to Welsch. Dr Post, who went around the Hennig pair during the gallop-out Friday, is pointing to the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap on the Belmont Stakes card. “In the end, Irad thought it was good,” Pletcher said. “He had a target. He said Known Agenda jumped into the bridle, was on the muscle, finished up good, galloped out good. Dr Post had to eat a little bit of dirt. It was just sort of the way it worked out. After the break it can get a little bit busy. They don’t have any special training hours for Belmont horses like they do some other places.” Bourbonic, the Wood Memorial winner, and Overtook, third in the Peter Pan Stakes, worked a half-mile in 48.41 seconds, coming home in 24.41 and galloping out five furlongs in 1:01.06 and six furlongs in 1:13.48. “I thought it was a good work from both of them,” Pletcher said. “Overtook, historically, is not an overambitious work horse. I thought he went well and Bourbonic looked good.” Pletcher said Overtook’s two workouts since the Peter Pan “have been better than what we were seeing before that.” Rock Your World sharp in work At Santa Anita Friday, Rock Your World worked five furlongs in 58.80 seconds in preparation for the Belmont Stakes. Trainer John Sadler said he was looking for something sharp on Friday after the horse worked five furlongs in 1:01.20 last week. “We were really happy with it,” Sadler said. “We wanted to go a little bit stronger than his last work. It was a fast work, but we liked the way he did it, we liked the way he galloped out.” Rock Your World entered the Kentucky Derby unbeaten in three starts, including a front-running score over Medina Spirit in the Santa Anita Derby. A hard bump with Essential Quality leaving the gate in the Kentucky Derby left Rock Your World 10th early, effectively ending his chances. “I think he’s gotten brighter every week since the Derby,” Sadler said. “I thought looked exceptional the last two weeks.” Hot Rod Charlie, the Kentucky Derby third-place finisher, was expected to work Friday prior to the first race at Santa Anita. Both horses were scheduled to be shipped via Federal Express early Saturday morning with an arrival at Belmont Saturday afternoon. :: Enhance your handicapping with DRF’s Belmont Park Clocker Report ◗ Brooklyn Strong was scheduled to work at Parx on Saturday, after which a determination would be made on whether the Grade 2 Remsen winner runs in the Belmont Stakes, trainer Danny Velazquez said. Velazquez labeled Brooklyn Strong “50-50” to run. “I just want to see that explosion in the workout,” Velazquez said. “If I don’t see it, we’ll wait and skip it.” ◗ Keepmeinmind is at Belmont Park and is under consideration for the Belmont Stakes. Trainer Robertino Diodoro said he wanted to get a line on how the horse handled Belmont Park’s main track. He might breeze over it on Monday. Keepmeinmind galloped over the main track Friday morning. ◗ France Go de Ina had an eventful start to his training session Friday morning. As he was walking from the paddock onto the main track, he wheeled and unseated exercise rider Masaki Takano. Takano maintained a hold of the reins and France Go de Ina did not run off. France Go de Ina proceeded to back up to the six-furlong pole and gallop 1 3/8 miles. He was reported to be fine back at the barn. On Thursday, it was confirmed that Ricardo Santana Jr. would ride France Go de Ina. Joel Rosario, who rode him in the Preakness, is riding Rock Your World.
