SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Course condition and trip helped Bellezza get back to her best form Saturday at Saratoga as she got the firm footing she prefers and a sweet ride from Jaime Rodriguez to win the Grade 2, $500,000 Flower Bowl Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths.  Amber Cascade, who, like Bellezza, was toward the rear of the field early, rallied to get second by a half-length over the pacesetting Be Your Best. La Mehana, the 7-5 favorite based on her monster win over yielding turf in the Grade 2 Glens Falls last month, finished fourth, beaten 3 1/4 lengths. Madame Mischief, Long Ago and Marksman Queen completed the order of finish. In Time was scratched.  The win was the fourth from 11 career starts for Bellezza, but second in four starts since being transferred by Moyglare Stud Farm to the U.S. and the Clement stable. Bellezza, who won the Grade 3 Sheepshead Bay for Christophe Clement at Aqueduct in early May, is 2 for 2 on firm footing and with Rodriguez in the irons. She was third in the Grade 1 New York and second, 8 3/4 lengths behind La Mehana, in the Grade 2 Glens Falls, those runs coming for Miguel Clement, who took over the stable following his father’s death on May 25.  Bellezza, who broke from the outside post in the seven-horse field, was a bit wide around the first turn, but was able to get tucked in along the inside after straightening away in the stretch the first time.  :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Bellezza was 14 lengths back after the opening six lengths as Be Your Best, under Edgard Zayas, opened up a 5 1/2-length advantage while running six furlongs in 1:13.54. Bellezza (96 Beyer Speed Figure) advanced along the inside around the third turn, split Amber Cascade and Madame Mischief at the eighth pole and overtook Be Your Best at the sixteenth pole.  “Miguel told me try to save some ground from the beginning, that’s what we did,” said Rodriguez, whose two career graded wins have come on this filly. “In the first turn we were a little bit wide and then dropped in a little bit and we had the rail all the way on the backside. From the three-sixteenths to the quarter pole I just released her and just tried to find a spot where we got free and once she was in the clear she explode.”  Bellezza covered the 1 3/8 miles over firm ground in 2:14.80 and returned $7.50 as the second choice.  “I’ve always thought she’s better on firm turf,” Clement said. “Her last two efforts might have been a touch subpar by her standards I think, due to the ground… [Rodriguez] gave her a remarkable ride.”  Conversely, La Mehana did not have as smooth a trip under Carmouche.  “First thing Kendrick told me on La Mehana was ‘I was never able to get her switched off or covered up, I’m always too wide, she’s always a little bit keen and racy a bit,’ “ Clement said. “Jaime was able to be on the rail, switch her off and it was probably a tale of two trips, to be honest with you.”  Trainer Saffie Joseph said he was fine with the aggressive trip Be Your Best got under Zayas, she just couldn’t see out the 1 3/8 miles on this day.  “I had no problem getting beat like that,” Joseph said. “Obviously, I would have liked to have seen her relax a bit better. At least we know we weren’t the best.”  The best on this day was Bellezza. She earned a fees-paid berth to the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, in which she will likely take on the best routing turf fillies in the world on Nov. 1 at Del Mar.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
