Breezin Brianne, the dominant winner of the B.C. Cup Debutante, headlines the first of a quartet of CTHS Sales Stakes events on a unique Monday evening card at Hastings beginning at 7 p.m. Pacific. The four stakes are positioned as the first, second, fourth, and seventh races on the program. The first pair, each for 2-year-olds, will cover 6 1/2 furlongs, while the others, each for 3- and 4-year-olds, will cover 1 1/16 miles. All of the stakes are exclusively for CTHS sales graduates. A daughter of Bakken, Breezin Brianne was an 8 1/4-length winner Aug. 5 for trainer Mel Snow. The conditioner saddled three of the four runners in that race and saw the 4-5 favorite deliver as expected. Snow has trimmed his representation down to just a pair for the CTHS Sales Stakes, including Debutante runner-up Why Nots a Wynner. “Both fillies came out of the race in good shape and are training well,” said Snow, adding that each “should take a step forward from the last race.” Breezin Brianne is the only non-maiden in the field and figures a very short price. Race 2 is for 2-year-old males, and the field has only one win among them – Mount Doom’s victory in the B.C. Cup Nursery Stakes on Aug. 5. Another son of Bakken, Mount Doom drew the post 2 on Monday. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. Of significant interest in the same race will be debuting Counter Cat, from the barn of Keith Pedersen. The gelding, by Counterforce and from the mare I Believe in Angel, was a $25,000 sales purchase. Both the sire and dam won their career debuts, and all three prior offspring from I Believe in Angel won first time out. The final two stakes on the card are for 3- and 4-year-olds over 1 1/16 miles. A field of five will assemble for the fillies division in race 4. The controlling speed is likely to be Air Force, another trained by Pedersen. The filly won a swift allowance race in May and later shared pace duties in the July 1 Monashee Handicap over Monday’s distance. Main opposition to Air Force figures to come from Matsqui, a Mark Freeman trainee who came from behind and narrowly won the Monashee. The final stakes on the card features a rematch between the one-two finishers in the Aug. 5 Sir Winston Churchill Handicap, also run at 1 1/16 miles. Taking advantage of a spirited early pace battle, Diocles and What’s Shakin rallied from the back to hit the wire together, with Diocles prevailing by a head. The favorite figures to be Lucky Force, who boasts an enviable 8-for-13 record at Hastings and has steadily earned Beyer Speed Figures in the mid-70s. Lucky Force also brings a maturity edge over the 3-year-old Diocles and What’s Shakin. The Monday card has nostalgic appeal as Monday evening racing used to be a tradition at Hastings. In addition, the surrounding Pacific National Exhibition is closed on Mondays, making a trip to the track less cumbersome for racing patrons. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
