Baby Vino is suddenly looking quite grown-up. The colt, who took some time to develop, jumped up from a last-out maiden win to a 10 3/4-length victory in the $125,000 Pegasus Stakes on Saturday at Monmouth Park that could have him facing big names in the 3-year-old division next time out.  The Pegasus was the final local prep for Monmouth's biggest race, the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell on July 18. Baby Vino ($7.80), who is trained by Lindsay Schultz for Cosmo Stables, as well as runner-up Schoolyardsuperman, earned free entry and start fees into the Haskell for their performances Saturday.  Baby Vino did not debut until last December and took five starts to break his maiden, but had improved his finishing position, and his Beyer Speed Figure, in each of his outings this year. He graduated with a 2 3/4-length score going 1 1/16 miles on May 1 at Oaklawn Park.  "He's had trouble in all of his races, and he had trouble in his last race, but he was able to overcome it last time and get the win," Schultz said earlier this week. "He was starting to relax a lot more. In his first few, he was a little keen, which could have put him in to trouble, too." :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! The works gave both Schultz and jockey Paco Lopez confidence the colt was ready to step up in class.  "When I saw this horse race in Oaklawn I told Lindsay I thought this was a good horse and she should keep in mind that this horse is better going longer," Lopez said. "I worked this horse last week so I knew he was ready." On Saturday, Baby Vino had no trouble, sitting a perfect stalking trip on the outside in the small field of five, all looking for their respective first stakes wins, under Lopez. National Charter was hard to handle early for Tyler Gaffalione, tossing his head as he made the lead and getting out into the first turn through the opening quarter of 23.87 seconds. Favored Schoolyardsuperman engaged on his outside, and pressed him through the half of 46.95. Entering the far turn, National Charter, on the inside, and Baby Vino, on the outside, both appeared to be coming under a ride as Schoolyardsuperman made the lead. But it was short-lived, as once straightened into the stretch, National Charter re-rallied inside. Meanwhile, the still-developing Baby Vino found his best stride, and quickly put those two away. He drew clear in the stretch unchallenged in the final sixteenth to his final margin.  "I was in perfect position off a couple of speed horses," Lopez said. "My horse broke well and put me in perfect position. When I asked this horse he gave me a big kick. I knew he would be ready for this. Lindsay does a nice job with her horses."  The final time for the 1 1/16 miles on the fast track was 1:44.36 seconds. Behind Baby Vino, Schoolyardsuperman won his private battle with National Charter, securing second by three-quarters of a length. Tricky Business and Star Sweeper completed the order of finish. Ponder and Dream scratched to run in Saturday's Delaware Derby.  Baby Vino thus becomes one of the stakes winners pointing to the Haskell, one of the summer's major stakes for 3-year-olds. The field is already expected to include Preakness Stakes winner Napoleon Solo; Grade 1 winner Further Ado, the beaten Kentucky Derby favorite who bounced back to win the Grade 3 Matt Winn last weekend; and, perhaps, Hedge Ratio, local winner of the Long Branch Stakes at Monmouth.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
