2012 Kentucky Derby field coming into focus

Isn’t He Clever works a half-mile in 51.60 seconds on Monday at Churchill Downs.

With the likely field for the 138th Kentucky Derby on May 5 at Churchill Downs starting to come into sharper focus, five horses with Derby aspirations worked Monday morning at Churchill Downs, and a surprise Derby starter worked at Calder in advance of his van trip to Kentucky later this week.

Daddy Nose Best, Mark Valeski, and Sabercat – who are certain starters in the Derby – and Isn’t He Clever and Optimizer, who are currently on the bubble in terms of graded earnings, all worked Monday at Churchill Downs, while in Florida, Trinniberg also worked.

2012 Kentucky Derby: Isn't He Clever joins Asmussen, still possible for Derby

Isn't He Clever, winner of last month's Borderland Derby, will try to use his affinity for Sunland Park to his advantage in Sunday's Sunland Derby.

Isn’t He Clever, the winner of the Borderland Derby at Sunland Park in February, has been transferred from trainer Henry Dominguez to Steve Asmussen, owner J. Kirk Robison told Churchill Downs publicity staff on Sunday.

Isn’t He Clever is currently based at Churchill Downs with Asmussen and is being considered for the Kentucky Derby. Isn’t He Clever finished eighth behind Kentucky Derby hopeful Bodemeister in the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on April 14 in his most recent start for the New Mexico-based Dominguez.

ARCADIA, Calif.- Liaison, the winner of the CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park last December but winless in three starts this year, will be sent to Churchill Downs on Monday, moving closer to a potential start in the Kentucky Derby on May 5.

“I want to take him over there and train him on the track,” trainer Bob Baffert said at his stable on the Santa Anita backstretch.

“A lot of horses move up when they get out of here.”

Keeneland: All Squared Away upsets Lexington Stakes to tune of $143.20

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Derby implications? Um, not this year. A 70-1 shot named All Squared Away was a stunning winner Saturday of the Grade 3, $200,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland in a race that, unlike most prior years, will not yield a starter for the Kentucky Derby.

With Julio Garcia riding for trainer Wesley Ward, All Squared Away prevailed by 1 1/2 lengths over Summer Front, the 2-1 favorite in a field of 11 3-year-olds, with Hammers Terror a neck back in third.

2012 Kentucky Derby: Went the Day Well ignores rain in six-furlong breeze

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Steady rain fell throughout training hours in Kentucky on Saturday morning, but all that precipitation was not a problem for horses working over the Polytrack at Keeneland. Included in the group was Kentucky Derby prospect Went the Day Well, whose six-furlong breeze went off as scheduled despite the inclement weather.

Went the Day Well (six furlongs in 1:14.45): With regular rider John Velazquez aboard, Went the Day Well worked in company with stablemate Crimson China, a turf stakes winner who finished fifth in the 2011 Blue Grass.

2012 Kentucky Derby: Rousing Sermon works 7 furlongs at Hollywood

Rousing Sermon may start in the Snow Chief for California-breds rather than the Kentucky Derby.

Rousing Sermon, who was only named a confirmed starter in the Kentucky Derby on Thursday, worked seven furlongs at Hollywood Park on Saturday in 1:27.20.

Working alone under exercise rider Marco Ramirez, Rousing Sermon galloped out a mile in 1:41, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said. Assistant trainer Dan Ward timed the final quarter-mile of Rousing Sermon’s workout in 23.80 seconds. Hollywood Park clockers timed Rousing Sermon through the first half-mile in 50.80 seconds. For the final three furlongs, he was timed in 36.40 seconds.

LOUISVILLE. Ky. - Kent Desormeaux has had two Kentucky Derby rides since he won the race for the third time in 2008 with favored Big Brown, those mounts being Hold Me Back (12th at 12-1 in 2009) and Paddy O’Prado (third at 12-1 in 2010). The 42-year-old Hall of Fame jockey said he strongly believes his mount in the upcoming Derby, Dullahan, is as “live as they come” and that he would be greatly humbled if he were to join revered company by winning a fourth Derby.

Down at Calder Race Course in south Florida, the connections of Trinniberg confirmed their intentions to run in the Derby, and potential starter Reveron dropped out of the race due to an injury sustained during a routine morning workout.
