Dale Romans sent out three winners of graded stakes over two days at Churchill Downs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – It was yet another respectable effort, albeit another losing one. In the last three runnings of the Kentucky Derby, horses trained by Dale Romans have finished third (Paddy O’Prado, 2010), fourth (Shackleford, 2011), and third (Dullahan, 2012), and it’s starting to frustrate the Louisville-born trainer a little.

The reality of backstretch life interfered in the moments after the race. It was time to head for the paddock to prepare another starter.

Kentucky Derby 2012: Take Charge Indy to have surgery for chip in ankle, will miss summer races

Take Charge Indy will have surgery this week to remove a chip from his left front ankle.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy came out of his 19th-place finish in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby with a chip in his left front ankle and will miss the major summer races, trainer Pat Byrne said Sunday morning.

Byrne said Take Charge Indy would undergo surgery early this week to have the chip removed. After 60 days of inactivity, Take Charge Indy will resume training, and Byrne hopes to get the horse back for a fall campaign.

After setting a strong early pace – which included the fourth-fastest six-furlong time (1:09.80) in the 138-year history of the race – Bodemeister, under Mike Smith, couldn’t hold off I’ll Have Another and finished second, beaten 1 1/2 lengths, in Saturday’s $2 million Kentucky Derby before an announced record crowd of 165,307 at Churchill Downs.
