SA RACE 3: WHAT A DUDE was gelded during his time off and could be rejuvenated as he plunges to below the price for which he was last claimed with blinkers removed for this $25,000 nonwinners-of-two tilt. Leading trainer Doug O’Neill’s go-to rider, Antonio Fresu, takes over on the son of Hard Spun who has been working right along. I’M A LUCKY MAN just missed two back in an identical spot under Kazushi Kimura and is dropping off a flat fourth in a $50,000 starter/optional claimer. (2)
PERFECT IN GRAY
Trainer: John Sadler
Last race: March 15, 5th
Finish: 1st by 7 3/4
Beyer: 67
First-time starter crushed $50,000 maiden-claiming Cal-bred fillies. Sped to lead, opened up in lane, won with plenty left. Claimed by Sadler from Steve Knapp, fits in starter allowance.
GP RACE 10: ARTHUR’S RIDE has worked nicely at Payson Park (including a Jan. 27 drill with Grade 1 winner Casa Creed) in advance of his return from an extended layoff and seems poised to clear the first allowance condition. Trainer Bill Mott’s go-to rider, Junior Alvarado, has the mount on the powerful gray son of Tapit who graduated at Gulfstream with an 89 Beyer Speed Figure. (1)
The field-size problem in American racing is evident in Saturday’s stakes.
At Oaklawn, the Purple Martin drew six entrants, the Whitmore seven. The lone open stakes at Laurel, the Harrison Johnson, got seven, as did the Hutcheson at Gulfstream. The Pasadena at Santa Anita lured a grand total of five 3-year-old turf horses; the San Marcos has seven, but The Chosen Vron is odds-on.
