* Tin Man Commin ($21.80) reaped the benefits of the pace falling apart in front of him to come from 20 lengths back and capture the $40,000 To Much Coffee Stakes at Hoosier Park by 2 3/4 lengths. Mr. Mink, favored at 7-5 in the field of 12 Indiana-breds, sprinted off to his usual commanding lead but shortened stride through the far turn and finished last, beaten more than 40 lengths.

Rider boycott spreads to Hoosier Park

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - While Churchill Downs Inc. officials gave assurances Saturday that there would be a full program at company track Hoosier Park in Anderson, Ind., where racing was canceled Friday because jockeys refused to ride, the prospect of even more boycotts loomed a possibility across the country.

Jockey Club names newcomers

The Jockey Club has elected seven new members, the group announced Thursday.

The newly elected members are William Backer, Robert McNair, Nick Nicholson, Mace Siegel, Stella Thayer, Frank "Scoop" Vessels III, and William T. Young Jr.

Backer owns Smitten Farm in Virginia and serves on the board of directors of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.

McNair, owner of Stonerside Stable, serves on the board of trustees of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and on the board of directors of Breeders' Cup Ltd.

Linda Regina rallied to win Thursday's Group 3 Prix Fille de l'Air at Toulouse, the last European group race of the year. Linda Regina (8-1), a 3-year-old filly trained by Criquette Head-Maarek, defeated Delightful Sofie by a short head, covering the 1 5/16 miles on very heavy ground in 2:22.90. . . . Even the Score, a two-time Grade 2 winner owned by Ro Parra, has retired to his owner's Millennium Farm near Lexington, Ky., where he will stand in 2005 for an $8,500 fee. A 6-year-old son of Unbridled's Song, Even the Score retires with a record of 29-9-1-9 and $751,629 in earnings. . . .

Kitten's Joy has knee surgery

Kitten's Joy, the standout 3-year-old grass specialist who is the favorite to win the Eclipse Award for top turf horse, underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday morning to have a bone chip removed from his front left knee.

Kitten's Joy, owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, is expected to get about 90 days off before returning to light training at Palm Meadows in south Florida "in February or so," said trainer Dale Romans. "The Woodford Reserve on Kentucky Derby Day will be our first major goal for next year."

TVG has record quarter handle

Television Games Network's handle of $90.7 million in the third quarter of this year was the highest of any quarter in the company's five-year history, a 41 percent increase from the same period in 2003, the company announced Wednesday. For the first nine months of 2004, TVG handled $221.7 million, a 47 percent increase over the same period last year.

Saturday stakes recaps (11/6/04)

* Leaving on My Mind ($3.40) ran to his short price in the $100,000 Jean Lafitte Stakes at Delta Downs, drawing clear to win by five lengths. Longshot Rubialedo rallied to finish second, followed by My Parade, who also turned in a bit of late run.

* At Hoosier Park, Francine Villeneuve and Jill Jellison shared the title in the fourth annual Female Jockey Challenge, and Free Bonus ($2.40) remained undefeated in her third career start after scoring a 3 1/2-length win in the $40,000 Miss Indiana Stakes for 2-year-old Indiana-bred fillies.

Sunday stakes recaps (11/07/04)

* Mercer's Launch ($2.80) sprinted clear early and widened through the stretch to score an easy 8 1/4-length victory over entrymate Scioto Bootski in the $40,000 Scarlet and Gray Handicap at Beulah Park.

* Snack ($11), under a well-timed ride by Rodney Prescott, rallied from more than 10 lengths back to capture the $40,000 Indiana Futurity at Hoosier Park by a half-length. The race is for 2-year-old statebreds.

Friday's Woodbine card was canceled after two of nine scheduled races when the jockeys voted to stop riding because of high winds gusting in excess of 45 mph. . . . After daylong rain and deteriorating weather conditions, racing at The Meadowlands was canceled after the fourth race Thursday night. Live racing was scheduled to resume Friday night. . . .To make up for dates lost last month because of poor track conditions, Charles Town will add seven Tuesday cards and two Monday programs (Nov. 22 and Dec. 22) in November and December. Starting Nov.
