Woodbine: Skylander Girl wins Ontario Debutante

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Skylander Girl ($6.60) disposed of the heavily favored Conquest Whiplash in the stretch en route to a comfortable win Saturday at Woodbine in the $140,000 Ontario Debutante Stakes.

Conquest Whiplash darted out to a clear early lead in the six-furlong dash for 2-year-old fillies. Skylander Girl took up the chase heading into the turn and then pressed the leader until midstretch, where she assumed command. Skylander Girl got home on top by 2 1/2 lengths in 1:11.05.

Sweetsoutherndame nosed out Madly Truly for second, and Questera outlasted a fading Conquest Whiplash, who finished last in the five-horse field. Spanish Flower was scratched.

Jim McAleney rode Skylander Girl, who banked $90,000 for owner and trainer Alex Patykewich.

“After we left [the gate], I was able to get her back a couple of lengths and switch to the outside so that we could have a nice, clean trip,” McAleney said. “When she saw daylight, she’s so competitive, and she kicked on. To be able to kick on after that shows the talent and ability that she’s got.”
