Woodbine: Ami's Holiday rallies to win Grey Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Favored Ami’s Holiday came from last in a four-horse field to take the 103rd running of the $174,400 Grey Stakes under Luis Contreras at Woodbine Sunday.

Ami’s Holiday ($5.10) lagged well behind his three rivals on the backstretch, as Big Bazinga set an honest pace in the 1 1/16-mile route for 2-year-olds. Ami’s Holiday commenced his rally at the three-eighths pole, and collared Big Bazinga in the final strides en route to a half-length score in 1:44.80. Second choice Go Greeley finished a distant third, and shipper Give No Quarter was eased in the stretch.

Contreras was also aboard when Ami’s Holiday won his only other outing in a six-furlong maiden special.

“Last time, he really surprised me, because I didn’t think he’d have the speed to win the race,” Contreras said. “But he was pretty good. He just likes to win. He was very good all around the first turn (in the Grey). From the three-eighths to the wire, he (tried to) to lay in on horses.”

Trained by Josie Carroll, Ami’s Holiday banked $124,200 for owner Ivan Dalos, who bred the colt’s broodmare sire, classic winner Victory Gallop.

There was no place, show or triactor wagering on the Grade 3 Grey.
