Gemologist brings his record to 4 for 4 with an allowance victory at Gulfstream to begin his 2012 campaign.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Undefeated Gemologist drew post 6 in a field of eight 3-year-olds entered Wednesday for Saturday’s $1 million Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.

[WOOD MEMORIAL: News updates, contender replays, watch the race live]

Gemologist, who has won all four of his starts, will likely need a top-two finish to accrue enough graded stakes earnings to get into the Kentucky Derby. Gemologist, trained by Todd Pletcher for the WinStar Farm – the same connections that won the 2010 Kentucky Derby with Super Saver – is coming off a seven-length allowance win at Gulfstream on March 16. Javier Castellano rides.

Alpha, winner of the Count Fleet and Grade Withers Stakes over the inner track, will break from the rail under Ramon Dominguez. Alpha, a son of Bernardini, is owned by Godolphin Racing and trained by Kiaran McLaughlin.

The Wood will go as race 9 (5:15 p.m. Eastern) on an 11-race card and will be preceded by the $250,000 Comely for 3-year-old fillies, a race in which Agave Kiss was not entered; the $250,000 Bay Shore led by Swale Stakes winner Trinniberg. The Grade 1 Carter, featuring Caleb’s Posse, Shackleford, and Jackson Bend, will be run following the Wood.

The Wood will be shown live on NBC in a 90-minute telecast that will also include the Santa Anita Derby.

Wood Memorial (G1), Post Time: 5:15 ET Saturday

Purse: $1,000,000; 1 1/8 miles

You may want to try being a comedian, since you obviously know nothing about horse racing.

Howard, You have some serious issues, my friend! Ever here of a horse called Uncle Mo, a Pletcher horse who tried an easy one-turn mile to start his 3 yo campaign and then tried another one-turn mile to get ready for the BC Classic? Remember where those preps got him - the answers are: Off the Derby Trail AND dead last in the Classic! Gemologist just got in his one-turn mile run and heads into the Wood playing catch-up... regardless of outcome tomorrow, Gemologist will NOT win the Derby, let alone sniff the Triple Crown!!!

Not So Fast My Friend : You must really focus on what has been taking place ever since last years Juvenile Breeders Cup ! It is very possible that we as racing fans ( JUST MIGHT WITNESS ) 8 or 9 Colts returning to CHURCHILL DOWNS KENTUCKY DERBY . And for the likes of GEMOLOGIST fans , You would have Better odds Swimming Across the Atlantic Ocean than to see ( GEMOLOGIST ) or any other colt W I N the Triple Crown this year . This season is totally loaded with GREATNESS , and what a ShowDown we hope to see take place at Santa Anita this Fall ( BREEDERS CUP CLASSIC ) . Calm Down my friend about seeing a Triple Crown Winner this year , this crop of Colts are way too strong , and each Colt seems to be coming from every angle by Form , Conditioning . My Opinion , Chances would seem more clear in seeing a diffrent ( W I N N E R ) in each of the Triple Crown races . I AM 99.9% SURE THAT OUR KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER WILL BE COMING OUT OF LAST YEARS ( Juvenile Breeders Cup Race ) ...................... To me , EVERY OTHER COLT that did not compete in that race IS REALLY BEHIND THE EIGHT-BALL

GEMOLOGIST is a fine developing Colt . Absolutely ! But Triple Crown . . . I would booked that bet in a heart-beat . In all Honesty , ANY OF THE TOP FINISHERS FROM LAST YEARS JUVENILE BREEDERS CUP - has a H U G E advantage over ( NOT JUST GEMOLOGIST ) but the rest of the field . Actually , if I had my wish , could you just picture the Match Up race between GEMOLOGIST vs BODEMEISTER in the PREAKNESS ( IF BY CHANCE NEITHER MAKE IT TOO THE KENTUCKY DERBY ) . I dont see that happening , but wowwwwww ! How many Colts do you think would be going onto the PREAKNESS out of the KENTUCKY DERBY if that would ever take place . That would probably scare many of the contenders away , other than maybe the top 6 or so .

If I had a nice horse,he would not run in the Wood. I don't know if its a jinx or they do something to track trying to soup it up. The last horse to win both the Wood and the Derby was Fusaichi Pegasus. He was done pretty much after that. Look at the horses that were never right after the Wood. I Want Revenge, Eskendereya, Buddha and Beeamy Road and his 117 Beyer. Other horses also. Unbridled Song won the Wood, finished up the track in the Derby and was never the same. Even Secretariat lost in the Wood. I would take my horse somewhere else on my way to Kentucky

I believe a horse named Funnycide did rather well in the derby...but i get what your saying.

You ever think they weren't good enough with some soundness issues? Ridiculous.
Anonymous More than 1 year ago
I don't know if it is that ridiculous or not. Be carefull using the numbers that come out of that race when your handicapping

Good point TM, "Gemologist" BINGO, ideal PP #6, poor Alpha, rail will make it even tougher for him to impress being second..with draw I like #3 My AD n #4 Matz horse to come in behind GEM...nice card, and should see a stellar budding star by 6:00PM on Saturday, wish I could bethere...enjoy the display! Don , Thanks again for your reply last week before I left for Dubai . Wowwwww , speaking about what I had ask you about reguarding Javier Castellano riding GEMOLOGIST or EL PADRINO in the Kentucky Derby ........... The words exchanged between Lets Go Stables , Pletcher , and Jockey were not too polite . It seemed like Javier Castellano was more focused on the where-abouts of Union Rags with Julien Leparoux thru-out the race , instead of paying attention on how to rate his Colt to Win the race . A Very Bad Ride On Both Jockeys Account . Julien Leparoux should have known this was coming as soon as it started . A Worse Ride For Julien I Believe . Dubai was awesome Don . The fireworks were BOOM . Afew sad momments though , reguarding what took place with Bob Baffert , then two horses having to be put down , then one other seriously injured . Over - All , an awesome WIN for Sheikh Mohammed 1 - 2 in the DUBAI WORLD CUP ! GOD Takes Care Of Those That Take Care ( That Is What I Believe Truly Happened )

Are there only two horses in the wood? What about other PP?

One barometer of the whole group just might be Teeth Of The Dog. Sadly, it looks like he will have to do without the services of Leap-a-roo.
