Turfway's Spiral Stakes new target for Channel Isle

Email

Channel Isle and Red Wings are both being pointed to stakes at Turfway on March 23, trainer D. Wayne Lukas said Friday. Channel Isle, an allowance winner at Oaklawn who was fourth in last month’s Grade 3, $300,000 Southwest, had been pointing to the Louisiana Derby, but Lukas said he will run instead in the Grade 3, $550,000 Spiral.

Red Wings, meanwhile, had been pointed to the Spiral but is unlikely to get in on earnings, Lukas said, and is now being pointed to the $75,000 Rushaway. Red Wings is a maiden special weight winner at Oaklawn who was third in a recent allowance won by Carve, who will run in the Grade 2, $600,000 Rebel on Saturday at Oaklawn.

Jon Court has the mount on both horses, Lukas said. Channel Isle and Red Wings race for Calumet Farm. Lukas said Broken Spell also will head to Turfway, for the Grade 3, $100,000 Burbonette on the same card. The race will be run on Polytrack. The last time she raced over that synthetic surface, she was second in the Grade 1 Alcibiades at Keeneland.
