Trini Brewnette up in time in South Ocean Stakes

Michael Burns Trini Brewnette (No. 6) and jockey Alan Garcia win the South Ocean Stakes by a nose Saturday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trini Brewnette ($17.30) took the long way home to notch her first stakes win in the $125,400 South Ocean at Woodbine on Saturday.

Trini Brewnette trailed in ninth on the backstretch while Audacious Bear set honest middle fractions in the 1 1/16-mile test for Ontario-sired 2-year-old fillies. Lukewarm favorite Neshama took dead aim at Audacious Bear at the quarter pole, as Trini Brewnette commenced a five-wide rally, and the latter got up in the last jump to prevail by a nose in a time of 1:47.

Neshama finished second by 1 1/4 lengths over Audacious Bear. Perfect Ella closed for fourth and was followed by Bella Fabiana, Union Conqueror, Zermatta, I Cannot Find It, and Battle Castle.

Alan Garcia got a leg up from trainer Danny Vella on Trini Brewnette, who banked $75,000 for owner Derek Chin.

“[Vella] told me to take her back a little and save all the ground you can,” said Garcia. “When it’s time to go, push the button, and she’s going to give you everything she has.”
