Top prospect Dynamite Charge sustains fatal injuries in workout

DEL MAR, Calif. -- The highly regarded 2-year-old filly Dynamite Charge had to be euthanized Sunday morning after she sustained a catastrophic injury at the conclusion of a workout at Del Mar.

Dynamite Charge had just completed her workout when she was pulled up shortly after the wire, favoring her left hind leg. Trainer Doug O'Neill said she had fractures of the sesamoids and condyle in that joint and that the severity of the injury necessitated her being euthanized.

O'Neill was watching the work with John Moynihan, racing manager for Dynamite Charge's owner, the Stonestreet Farm of Barbara Banke, when the incident occurred. They rushed from the box seats as soon as she was pulled up.

Dynamite Charge, a daughter of Super Saver, won her lone start on July 4 at Santa Anita. Her work on Sunday was her first since that race. She was being pointed to next month's Sorrento Stakes as well as the Del Mar Debutante, both at Del Mar.
