Thistledown: Silver Tongued challenges elders in Governor's Buckeye Cup

The 3-year-old Silver Tongued will challenge older Ohio-breds and race beyond 1 1/16 miles for the first time in Sunday’s $50,000 Governor’s Buckeye Cup at Thistledown.

Silver Tongued is 3 for 4 locally. He won the $75,000 Best of Ohio J.W.Galbreath on his way to being named Ohio 2-year-old colt of the year last October. This year, he won the $75,000 Cleveland Gold Cup going 1 1/8 miles. In his most recent local outing, he finished sixth in the Ohio Derby.

Trained by Jeff Greenhill, Silver Tongued has a come- from-the-clouds running style and so the added distance of 1 ¼ miles may not be a problem since he will have ample time to launch his rally. Lori Wydick retains the mount.

Raise the Reward has two wins this season, both locally. He won the Rowland Memorial on May 18 going six furlongs and the Lewis Memorial on July 13 going 1 1/8 miles. Trained by Jeff Radosevich, Raise the Reward is a versatile sort who can win while on the lead or from off the pace. The 7-year-old Raise the Reward is winless, however, in eight attempts at the 1 ¼-mile distance. Jacob Radosevich will ride.

Bold Captain won the prep for the Buckeye Cup on Aug. 23 by 2 ½ lengths from just off the pace. Trained by Miguel Feliciano, Bold Captain has won once in six attempts going 10 furlongs, but was second in this race last year. Bold Luis Gonzalez retains the mount.

The 10-horse field also includes the 12-year-old Catlaunch, who recorded two wins and pair of close seconds in this race between 2007 and 2010.
