PEDIGREE ANALYSIS
By Dan Illman
Sire:
Badge of Silver won the first three starts of his career by a combined 26 lengths, including the Grade 3 Risen Star Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. As a five-year-old, Badge of Silver won the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap and the Grade 3 Hal's Hope Handicap, both at nine furlongs. The following season, he took the Grade 2 San Gabriel Handicap at 1 1/8 miles on grass.
Along with Silver Medallion, Badge of Silver's first crop includes King Congie, the winner of the Tropical Park Derby at nine furlongs on turf.
Dam:
Silver Medallion is a half-brother to Sweet Talker, the winner of the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at 1 1/8 miles on grass. Sweet Talker won at distances between six furlongs on dirt and nine furlongs on turf, took six stakes races, and earned over a million dollars.
The dam is a half-sister to Tiffany Diamond, a multiple stakes-winning sprinter on dirt at Del Mar. Tiffany Diamond raced twice, without success, at route distances.
Outlook:
On paper, Silver Medallion was expected to be successful at distances up to nine furlongs and he won the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby at that trip over Tapeta on February 12. He still must prove that he can handle dirt, but another furlong shouldn't pose too much of a problem.
THE WIZARD'S PACE ANALYSIS:
His best races have come when he has been able to stalk, especially in races that featured slower early clips. He can lay back and make one run as he proved in the El Camino Real Derby. Those tactics will suit him in the Kentucky Derby.
