ARCADIA, Calif. - Amazombie, the champion sprinter of 2011, will start in Saturday’s $150,000 Potrero Grande Stakes at Santa Anita, trainer Bill Spawr confirmed on Saturday morning.
“We’re all set,” Spawr said. “He jogged today. He’s pretty happy.”
Amazombie, 6, is the 7-5 favorite on the morning-line in the Grade 2 Potrero Grande, which is run over 6 1/2 furlongs. Spawr had considered scratching Amazombie in favor of the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn Park on April 14, but has opted to stay in California.
The ninth race on an 11-race program, the Potrero Grande is scheduled for 4:27 p.m., Pacific.
There are seven expected starters, following the scratches on Saturday morning of Smart Spending and Courtside.
Amazombie will make his second start of 2012 in the Potrero Grande. He was third in the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes in February.

OUR HEAT has a win and a second in two turf tries here. She has been favored both time but is meeting tougher today. Like her style, sitting back a bit early and then unleashing a strong closing kick. She seems to like the turf and graduated in a straight maiden grass race. The breeding is heavily slanted to turf. BEEZAROO has hit the board in her past five starts at this level. Has outrun her breeding on turf and scored her lone career victory over the Lakeside Turf Course. Rider chose top pick over her, but she's picked up leading ridder for this.
