ETOBICOKE, Ontario – There’s lots of speed in Friday’s fifth race at Woodbine, a $25,000 nonwinners-of-two for fillies and mares. Pretty Good Joke doesn’t need the lead and could end a drought for owner-trainer Nick Nosowenko in the five-furlong inner turf dash.
A 6-year-old daughter of the popular stallion Practical Joke, Pretty Good Joke has, for the most part, maintained solid Tapeta form since last summer. She completed her 2025 campaign with back-to-back seconds and has been second in both of her outings this spring.
After setting sail on a clear lead when boosted to this level most recently, Pretty Good Joke blew a five-length advantage in the stretch but held on for second. The 63 Beyer Speed Figure she earned under regular rider David Moran was near a career best.
Pretty Good Joke was a minor player in the majority of her six turf starts, which included two five-furlong inner turf excursions.
Kimberlina, Got a Complex, Atlantic Passage, Silent Sunshine, and Adorable Angel complete the field.
Kimberlina could be the best closer in the lineup. She earned her keep last year, during which she defeated $15,000 maidens in August and ran second at this level behind the good Rock Hard Rose in December. A wide trip worked against her when sixth behind Pretty Good Joke following a winter layoff May 29.
Romero Maragh takes over on Kimberlina. He won on his lone mount for her trainer, Steve Attard, who has good numbers second time off a layoff.
Got a Complex is making her first turf start. She wired $25,000 maidens in her local debut April 19 and was softened up in a speed duel when sixth three weeks later. Most recently, when dropping to this level while moving out to seven furlongs, she opened up a substantial lead before fading late to third.
Got a Complex is by the 12 percent grass sire Complexity. Her dam was a stakes-placed turf specialist who produced a placed runner on the grass. Jodeien Anderson will ride her again for trainer Debra Rombis.
Atlantic Passage got away slowly before closing belatedly for fourth behind Pretty Good Joke in her second start off the sidelines. She missed the board in both of her grass outings last summer in Kentucky and Indiana when she wasn’t conditioned by her current trainer, Darwin Banach.
Silent Sunshine is making her first start since a front-running fifth against two next-out winners in a $5,000 conditioned event Dec. 6. Her best of two turf races was a maiden-winning score for $25,000 a year ago here on the main course.
Adorable Angel also is coming off the bench and gets in light under apprentice Christoff Douglas, who has been riding at 115 pounds. She led most of the way when third in a $25,000 route the last time she went postward in October.
Post time for the first of seven races is 1 p.m.
