Will Take Charge, who finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby under Jon Court, will have Mike Smith aboard for the May 18 Preakness Stakes.

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas has named Mike Smith to ride Will Take Charge and Julien Leparoux on Titletown Five for the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 18.

Smith, who rode Palace Malice in the Kentucky Derby, will replace Jon Court, who had been aboard Will Take Charge in six of his eight starts. Will Take Charge finished eighth in the Derby after having to check at the three-sixteenths pole behind a tiring Verrazano.

“With a race of this magnitude and Mike being available, and I’ve had a good rapport with Mike over the years, I thought we’d try it,” Lukas said by phone from Kentucky.

Leparoux becomes the sixth rider on Titletown Five in what will be the son of Tiznow’s eighth career start. Titletown Five, owned in part by Pro Football Hall of Famer Paul Hornung, finished fourth in the Grade 3 Derby Trial under Gary Stevens, who will ride Oxbow for Lukas in the Preakness.

“Leparoux has always been able to relax a horse, and I think this is a very talented horse,” Lukas said. “If he’s able to settle him and Leparoux is able to find some room, I think he can make some noise.”

Lukas said all three of his Preakness horses could work at Churchill Downs on Monday and would van to Baltimore on Tuesday.

Others still under consideration for the Preakness as of Wednesday were Mylute, Itsmyluckyday, Goldencents, Departing, Govenor Charlie and Street Spice.

Lukas is trying to blame Court for his mistakes. He has been Down on Jon since Titletown Five did not fare well at the Louisiana Derby. Titletown is a sub par horse but has some deep pocket owners. Court has given Lukas most of his big wins this year including a great ride over Oxbow in the Rebel. If Court had been on Oxbow, WTC would have been lucky to be 2nd to him. Donna Brothers said on National TV just before the horses got to the gate that Will Take Charge seems to have left his race in the Post parade, meaning he had foamed up and expended to much energy because he was excited. Had Lukas ran him in the Arkansas Derby he would have been better prepared for the crowd as well as probably $600,000 richer. (Court won 2 or the last 3 AR Derbys, but had no mount on one this year) But Lukas wanted Calumet farm’s Oxbow to win that race. Maybe it is not a Jockey change, but a trainer change that is needed.

amazing how One race.....on a sloppy surface.....with a perfect setup (blazing fractions).....can turn the Tepid favorite IN that race, into the Next Triple Crown Winner !!! Different Surface....Different Fractions.....Different outcome.....IMO !!!

Governor Charlie will make this race interesting. Not sure he'll be able to beat Orb, but he's been improving. oh and everyone else, please bet the hell out of TT5 b/c it's Paul Hornung's horse, or it's your favorite number, or b/c DWL put Leparoux on him..whatever. PLEASE BET THIS HORSE and make the odds on the contenders better.

Will Take Charge may win next years race if he gets the same perfect trip he gave palice malice. that ride was worthy of a suspension. why is no one talking about that?

Orb will win the triple crown, and it's great to see a great and honest trainer and owner win it. Lukas doesn't train horses he just runs them, there is a difference.
