Nyquist is accompanied by his pony Satire, a 21-year-old former racehorse who also was with Goldencents before the 2013 Kentucky Derby.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Doug O’Neill’s barn, which supports racehorse aftercare via a number of outlets, is known for using off-the-track Thoroughbreds as stable ponies – most famously, the barn’s multiple Grade 1 winner Lava Man, who accompanied 2012 Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another around the country.

By the side of unbeaten champion Nyquist throughout this spring in Kentucky has been Satire, still spry enough to keep up with the 3-year-old at age 21. The Washington-bred gelding won once from seven starts during his racing career while competing at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park for trainer Mike Harrington.

Satire has been with the O’Neill barn for close to a decade, and this isn’t his first appearance on the Triple Crown stage. The gelding accompanied Goldencents to the 2013 Derby and Preakness.
