Pocono: Saturday 8/17 Analysis

Email

Best Bet: CAPTAINTREACHEROUS (12th)

Spot Play: CAMILLE (1st)

Race 1

(3) CAMILLE steps up from time to time and seems to be in a perfect spot on Saturday. She can leave for position and sit a sweet trip. (6) DROP THE BALL is clearly the one to beat; must use. (4) FEELING YOU was too far back last time. Don’t see this gal short!

Race 2

(3) I GOT TO BOOGIE gets a barn change to Burke this week. I’ve seen him purchase others from this barn and improve them multiple seconds. (5) UF DRAGONS QUEEN HAS BEEN BEATING UP ON LESSER. This is a test of whether she has turned a corner. (7) WHERETHEGIRLSARE has shown me enough to make me think she can beat this group; early speed.

Race 3

(7) WHEELING N DEALIN gets a ton of class relief this week and an aggressive new driver in the bike. I’m guessing it is time to stop babying this guy and Yannick will shake him up. (5) PUNXSUTAWNEY can win this race if he trots. That is a huge IF. (4) LINDYS TRU GRIT has been racing pretty well lately but seems a step slower than the top two.

Race 4

(4) ULTIMATE BEACHBOY moved into the Burke barn and brought a good effort in the Adios elimination. That was followed with a scratch-lame line and a good qualifier. From post four he should be forwardly placed and in the perfect spot to win. (6) NORMANDY INVASION had no chance of closing into slow fractions in his last two. This guy is better than you may think. (8) SIR RICHARD Z TAM has ability but drew poorly; mixed feelings.

Race 5

I’m not sure how Tim Tetrick will get (8) MARKET SHARE into the race, but he could offer a price above even money this week and that is very enticing. I’ll take a shot. (2) SEVRUGA has been super all year; impossible to ignore. (5) UNCLE PETER hasn’t missed the board this year. (4) WISHING STONE was uninvolved from post 10 last time. Expect speed this week.

Race 6

(2) CAROLS DESIRE is fast off the gate but does her best work from off a helmet. I see her working out a fine trip from this inside post. (6) NIKKI BEACH is probably the one to beat, but she does get outkicked in the stretch at times. (1) HANDSOFFMYCUPCAKE is still looking for her first win of the year. Perhaps Tetrick can help.

Race 7

(4) CREATINE wasn’t up to going two heats in the Hambletonian but really should take this group to task. (1) TO DREAM ON chased in some fast fractions and began to fade late in the Hambletonian Oaks. She faces the boys this week but is fast enough to stay with them. (6) POSSESSED FASHION gets a driver switch to Sears; a player.

Race 8

(1) JOHNY ROCK does his best work on the engine and was forced to different tactics last week when he had to start from the second tier. I’m expecting to see plenty of speed this week. (5) ROCKIN AMADEUS took a big shot with a quick move in the NJ Classic only to falter late. He fits nicely with this bunch. (2) RESISTANCE FUTILE has talent and is coming off a win. (7) MARTINI HANOVER seems to be moving in the right direction.

Race 9

(3) A ROCKNROLL DANCE does his best work near the front and was a shuffled-out non factor in the US Pacing Championship last time. This is the perfect spot to show speed and hopefully we’ll see it. (1) PET ROCK rarely puts in a bad effort and I have to think he’ll get a big piece in this race. (5) SWEET LOU was used hard last time and faded. He is a big threat with any decent trip.

Race 10 – Valley Forge

I liked (3) LOVE CANAL in the Fan Hanover back in June, but she wound up with a tough trip and (2) I LUV THE NITELIFE was great that night. If she can track Nitelife, who has won seven straight races, or pick up any live cover, I think she has a shot to upset. (9) SHEBESTINGIN is loaded with ability but stuck with post nine. She is good enough to overcome the obstacle.

Race 11 - Colonial

(4) SMILIN ELI raced well for a pair of seconds in the Hambletonian. To me, having missed most of July, he seemed a bit short. Tonight is his chance to show what he is made of. (5) SPIDER BLUE CHIP was stuck uncovered in the Hambo final and weakened in the stretch. If he leaves off the gate this week, he could find himself in the pocket or on the lead; upset chance. (8) ROYALTY FOR LIFE is your Hambletonian winner. All of his wins have been on the front and getting there from post eight should prove difficult. I just don’t think he is worth the short price this week. (6) CORKY is capable of winning if he moves forward. A win in this race will set him up for a $1 million bonus with a Breeders Crown victory.

Race 12 – Battle of the Brandywine

(4) CAPTAINTREACHEROUS is perfect in six starts this year. He would have to regress in a big way to lose. (1) LONEWOLF CURRIER can bring a big mile when he wants to. Is this one of his good weeks? (3) SUNSHINE BEACH doesn’t have the quickest brush of speed. I think Sears will suit him perfectly.

Race 13

(6) WIND OF THE NORTH was facing some tough company in those Pa Sire Stakes. There seems to be enough early speed to set up a rally from this guy; adds Miller. (5) ITS COMPLICATED is clear the one to beat, but I wouldn’t bet my life savings on him. (1) BAMBINO GLIDE has been a new horse since entering the Julie Miller barn.

Race 14

(9) SOMEPLACE SPECIAL should feel at home in this spot. The main obstacle is post nine. (2) TWINCREEKS JESSE is off a career best mile and was Miller’s choice over five others. (7) SHOCK IT TO EM is proven fastest and merits respect.
