Pink Pajamas named Michigan horse of year

Email

A dominant run of stakes performances during the Hazel Park meet helped Pink Pajamas earn the Michigan Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association’s Horse of the Year title for 2016.

The Equality filly also earned the state’s top 3-year-old honors on a campaign that included five wins in nine starts for earnings of $97,237.

Owned by Mast Thoroughbreds and trained by Robert Gorham, Pink Pajamas started the year as an allowance-level runner in Ohio, running second twice in four starts at Mahoning Valley Race Course and Thistledown.

The filly moved to Hazel Park for the summer, and quickly settled in with a 4 1/4-length win against older competition in an allowance race. She then established herself at the top of Michigan’s sophomore fillies’ pecking order with a 12 1/4-length score in the Regret Stakes.

The second half of the Hazel Park meet saw Pink Pajamas pick up two more allowance wins, one against older foes by disqualification and a 6 1/2-furlong prep for the 3-year-old fillies division of the Michigan Sire Stakes by 10 lengths.

Pink Pajamas put a stamp on her season in the Michigan Sire Stakes when she drew off under regular rider T.D. Houghton to win the one mile and 70-yard race by 13 3/4 lengths.

Bred in Michigan by Felicia Campbell, Pink Pajamas is the first foal out of the winning Crafty Friend mare Chantilly’s Friend.

Campbell earned dual honors as MTOBA’s Owner and Breeder of the Year in 2016. Homebreds under the Campbell colors included stakes winners Valid Offer and Gun Powder, and stakes-placed Haley Power, Grab the Loot, Battle Drum, and Run Dan Run. Combining individual returns and partnerships, Campbell’s runners won 31 starts and earned $356,366.

Graduates of Campbell’s Grass Lake, Mich. breeding program to run for other owners included Pink Pajamas, stakes winner Syncline’s Trip, and stakes-placed Couldnt Wait.

Pink Pajamas was also instrumental in helping her sire, Equality, earn Michigan’s Stallion of the Year title for the third consecutive year.

Equality, an 18-year-old son of Mt. Livermore, was represented by 21 winners last year with combined progeny earnings of $417,938. In addition to the state’s Horse of the Year, the stallion’s top runners included Older Male of the Year Boo Dutton, 2-Year Old Male of the Year Blessed Redeemer, and stakes-placed Trinity Revealed and Run Dan Run.

Equality stands at Dickinson Farms in Montgomery, Mich.

The state’s Broodmare of the Year was Inty Binty, a Cryptoclearance mare, whose two runners last year were multiple winners, including Boo Dutton, who won the older males division of the Michigan Sire Stakes at age 9. Her other foal, the Indy King mare Inty Indy, won twice last year, and is stakes-placed in a previous campaign. Inty Binty is owned by Twin Cedars Farm.

Elkhorn Oaks was named Michigan’s Smaller Farm Breeder of the Year, led by stakes-placed High Legend.
