Pimlico: Inspired's speed dangerous in The Very One

Email

Inspired, who has won three of her last four starts, looks like the one to catch on Friday in the $100,000 The Very One Stakes, a five-furlong grass race for older female sprinters that drew a bulky field of 11.

Inspired will benefit by the cut back to five furlongs after fading to fourth going 5 1/2 furlongs in the Giants Causeway at Keeneland on April 21. She led from start to finish in her three prior races, all wins. She is the 2-1 favorite on the morning line of Pimlico’s Frank Carulli.

Well Deserved could not catch Inspired in the Pan Zareta at Fair Grounds in January, but she has clearly improved since then. She was second in the Giants Causeway last time out when ridden for the first time by Julien Leparoux, who is back aboard Friday.

Jazzy Idea, 3, is in excellent form as she attempts to defeat her elders. She was a four-length winner of the Thirty Flags at Belmont Park on May 2, her third win in four turf sprints. She won on Pimlico’s course in her prior start on April 20.

Bounding Bi is making her first start of the year, but she was a mainstay of turf sprints in the mid-Atlantic region last year, when she won twice, and was a good second in the rich Turf Amazon at Parx. She drew the outside post, so she will need to use her speed to avoid going wide on the turn.

Weeper, 2 for 2 on turf, is a threat if ready to fire off a 13-month layoff.
