Oaklawn Park: On Fire Baby will head directly to Kentucky Oaks

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - On Fire Baby will make her next start in the Kentucky Oaks, trainer Gary Hartlage said on Thursday morning. The filly had been under consideration for both the Grade 2, $300,000 Fantasy on Wednesday, April 11, and the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby on April 14. Both races are at Oaklawn Park.

Hartlage said owner Anita Cauley made the decision.“She wanted a fresh horse for the Kentucky  Oaks,” Hartlage said.

The Grade 1, $1 million Kentucky Oaks is at Churchill Downs on Friday, May 4.

On Fire Baby won the Grade 3, $125,000 Honeybee at Oaklawn Park in her last start on March 10. She could work one more time at Oaklawn before heading to Churchill.

Hartlage said On Fire Baby would not be entered in either the Fantasy or the Arkansas Derby. On Fire Baby won the Grade 2 Pocahontas and Grade 2 Golden Rod at Churchill last fall.

ON FIRE BABY loves Churchill Downs and it her race to lose, and it doesnt hurt she is owned by my cousin Anita Cauley. But 8 weeks is a long time will need a mile work.

Good call by the owner. Once she wins the Oaks, they can then take the Rachael Alexandra path. To run on Saturday against 19 other horses would have been tough, look at what happened to Rags against 7 others, and he's the favorite?

Sorry I see you meant 8 weeks between starts in any event one would expect trainers know their horses condition.

Bad idea 8 weeks is way to long to win Oaks. Cross her off. When will trainers learn 5 or 6 weeks is really pushing it but 8 weeks no way.

Good observation on that. I think closers will dominate the Oaks. I'm thinking Summer Applause over Grace Hall. I think Princess will set the pace with Fg oaks winner and we'll see what happens from there.
