The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey has named its 2012 state-bred champions, led by Horse of the Year Javerre. The Outflanker gelding won four of seven starts in 2012 for earnings of $158,170, highlighted by a win in the New Jersey Breeders Handicap and on-the-board finishes in the Maryland Million Sprint and the City of Laurel Stakes. Those efforts also helped Javerre secure New Jersey’s champion sprinter and champion 3-year-old male honors. Javerre, owned by Smith Farm and Stable and bred by Gunsmith Stables, has continued his success in 2013, picking up his first graded stakes win in the Grade 3 General George Handicap at Laurel Park. He is the first foal out of the multiple stakes-winning Touch Gold mare Our Fantene. Also taking home multiple honors was Tee N Jay Farm’s homebred Senator Beck, who was named champion turf horse and champion 3-year-old female. The Artie Schiller filly won three of eight starts last year, highlighted by a win in the Desert Vixen Stakes, for earnings of $109,854. New Jersey’s Broodmare of the Year was Penniless Heiress, whose produce was led in 2012 by The Hunk, winner of John J. Reilly Handicap at Laurel Park. The 21-year-old Pentelicus mare is the dam of seven winners from eight starters, including Grade 1 winner and Florida sire Wildcat Heir, Grade 3 winner Forest Heiress, and stakes winner Forest Heir. Defrere was named New Jersey’s Stallion of the Year for a fifth consecutive year. The 21-year-old Deputy Minister horse, a full brother to Eclipse Award winner and leading sire Dehere, sired 37 winners of 57 races in 2012 for earnings of $1,671,188, led by stakes winner Arlo and stakes placers Emily Allstar and Chief Carlson. The most successful runners from Defrere’s 14 crops of racing age include Grade 3 winners Sister Fiona and Lilah, multiple stakes winner Souris, stakes winner Lilah, and nine-time Japanese stakes winner Le Mars Girl.
