LOS ALAMITOS, Calif.- New Look ran a flawless race to win his first stakes in Saturday’s $180,320 El Primero Del Ano Derby for 3-year-old Quarter Horse colts and geldings at Los Alamitos. New Look ($4.60) broke well from post 2, took the lead shortly after the start, and was ridden confidently late by jockey Rodrigo Aceves. New Look ran 400 yards in 19.81 seconds, finishing a half-length in front of Kobe, the 7-5 second choice in the betting. Mimi Wells and Dan Francisco own and train New Look and third-place finisher Willie Dasher, who was beaten a length by New Look. A gelding, New Look has won 4 of 11 starts and $99,995. Winless in his first six starts, New Look has won three of his last four races. The win by New Look gave the stallion Walk Thru Fire a sweep of the two major stakes at Los Alamitos over the weekend. Friday, Flame N Flash won her first major stakes in the $210,014 La Primera Del Ano Derby for 3-year-old fillies. Ridden by Francisco Rubio, Flame N Flash ($5) ran 400 yards in 19.91 seconds, outfinishing 16-1 First Prize Habit by a half-length. Flame N Flash races for Robert Williams of Utah and is trained by Juan Aleman. The filly has won 5 of 11 starts and $173,726. Flame N Flash won the Los Alamitos Two Million Juvenile, the consolation race for the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, in December.
