Lincoln: Armando Martinez injured in five-horse spill on Saturday

Email

LINCOLN, Neb. - Jockey Armando Martinez suffered severe facial injuries and two other riders were transported to local hospitals after a horrific five-horse spill during the running of the fifth race at Lincoln Race Course Saturday afternoon.

A field of nine Nebraska-bred maidens started the six-furlong race but only three would finish the race after Valentine Twist clipped the heels of pacesetting Cindy Who as that one was getting out into the final turn on this five-eighth-mile oval. Martinez, riding Valentine Twist, fell hard in front of the remainder of the field. Four more horses went down over Martinez and Valentine Twist with another able to pull up and avoid the accident.

Martinez will require reconstructive surgery to repair the injuries. Jordan Olesiak, aboard Ruby Red Green, suffered a dislocated hip and other injuries, and Chris Fackler, riding Marlene's Cat, suffered bruises but was treated and later released at a local hospital. All horses involved in the spill escaped serious injury.
