Kingsport prevails in Sir Barton Stakes

Michael Burns Kingsport and jockey Patrick Husbands win the Sir Barton Stakes by one length Wednesday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Kingsport ($12.60) held off a charging Born in a Breeze to take the $125,000 Sir Barton Stakes on Wednesday night at Woodbine.

With Patrick Husbands aboard, Kingsport stalked the leading filly Clarkston Hope through moderate fractions in the 1 1/16-mile event. Kingsport hit the front at the top of the stretch and opened up a daylight lead en route to a one-length win in a quick final time of 1:43.14.

Born in a Breeze started slowly after stumbling badly, then closed stoutly on the far outside from last. Chris’s Brew rallied wide for third, while Seen It All Before edged out 7-10 favorite Strut the Course for fourth in the seven-horse field of Ontario-sired runners.

Kingsport, a 3-year-old trained by Sid Attard, earned $75,000 for Goldmart Farm.

“He always tries,” Attard said. “He’s a nice, big horse. I really think he’s going to be a nice 4-year-old.”
