Kentucky Derby workouts: Take Charge Indy pleases trainer Byrne in Palm Meadows work

Take Charge Indy worked five furlongs in 1:00.47 on Thursday at Palm Meadows.

Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy  worked five furlongs in 1:00:47 at Palm Meadows on Thursday in his final prep for the Kentucky Derby.

With exercise rider Susie Bricker aboard, Take Charge Indy broke off at the half-mile pole in company with stablemate Zimmer and posted fractions of 11.60, 23.60 and 35.60 and 47.60, according to track clocker Bryan Walls, before galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.60.

“It was a super work, he couldn’t have gone any better,” said trainer Pat Byrne. “He went a little faster than I liked but that’s all right because of the way he did it. He looked like he was just two-minute-licking out there.”

Take Charge Indy will ship to Churchill Downs on Tuesday on a flight that will include two other Derby starters, Gemologist and El Padrino, along with potential Kentucky Oaks favorite Grace Hall.

As far as his breeding goes, he is the best bred colt in this derby. His dam made over 2.4M and his sire is most influential since Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector. This horse wins the Derby his value will be skyhigh. Derby day we will find out if Take Charge Indy knows who his daddy is.

He was my horse in the Breeder Cup and I still have faith in him as he tries the Triple Crown races. I have bet him to win in all these races. Paid good in Florida.

I think this horse is peaking at the right time. I took Union Rags and El Padrino and boxed them with two other horses in Florida Derby that I thought could get up for third for the trifecta. One was Take Charge Indy and the other was Reveron (he was really training good). That turned out good for me. So now everybody likes Union Rags after Take Charge Indy kicked his butt? A bad trip? I don't get it. Maybe people should look at the jockey. Calvin has won with worse horses than the son of A.P. Indy.

Hes a toss. Horse has the wrong running style for the Derby. Only reason he beat Union in Florida he was lone speed and coming off an extended break. Not close to the horse Union Rags will be Next Saturday

Union Rags "race" was just a workout. At no time did Leparuox ask him for his best and three strides after the wire Rags galloped out right by everyone! the race meant nothing. but he will get a ton out of it. It was just a workout mark my words.

This is a fabulos work. palm Meadows is known for being kind to a horse's feet/legs and the trainer is a first class guy. if he was able to pull it off this would be great for him!

Love Pat Byrne and the preparation, remeber Awesome Again how he beat the mighty Silver charm and the bonehead ride of Dettori on Swain in the BCC

I'll never forgive Dettori for that. I was counting my money at the 3/16ths pole. Then suddenly Swain galloped into the stands and ordered a Budweiser. By the time Dettori finally straightened him out, he still managed to get 3rd. @#$!@#%
