Kentucky Derby workouts: Liaison has hard six-furlong drill at Churchill Downs
By Mike Welsch
Email
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Liaison was the only potential Kentucky Derby starter to work on Wednesday, going a stiff six furlongs in 1:12.92 at Churchill Downs with jockey Shaun Bridgmohan aboard.
Liaison, whom trainer Bob Baffert named a definite Derby starter on Tuesday, broke off at the 5 ½-furlong pole and posted splits of 12.51, 24.70, 36.89, 49.11 and 1:00.56, finishing his work a sixteenth of a mile past the wire before galloping out seven-eighths in 1:26.58.
Liaison, winner of the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity in his 2-year-old finale, has failed to hit the board in three starts at 3, including a sixth-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby.
What trick are you referring too... in case you didnt know, there is now and also elgible list for the derby.

This is a Baffert scratch after 9am Friday morning to keep out the competition, an old D Wayne Lukas trick. Except now they have to wait until Friday instead of Thursday.

It depends on what the horse needs to reach peak condition,Bode should already be there with his monster race in the Arkansas Derby. What will be important for him is how he came out physically (did he lose weight etc) and his energy level. They perform teasts like red blood cells and others to gain insight into what is not visable by the trainer/.

Let me restate any workout that is less than 12 seconds a furlong is good, the more under 12 second a panel the better the work.Usually most trainers will only time a work of 5 or 6 furlongs and then the gallop out is not always timed but in this age of information anything they can get for this race is news.

Any colt that can work in 46 and change is sharp for this level of race.

I am surprised he isn't running Drill as well to be honest... Typical Baffert and I promiss you he is hoping the Lucas horse gets in as well cause he is another slow horse that has no shot at hitting the board.

ANY horse in the field can work as fast as that if they wanted to... works are works and there is no purse for a workout. I do not know why people think the slowest horse in the race cant work 58 for 5 furlongs if they went out and wanted to. It is the way you work not the time. I see he put Bridgmohan on him for the work anyone knows what that means?? Bridgmohan is one of the fastest gate jocks in the country so he wanted a jock that will work the horse fast. You didn't see Bridgemohan on Bodemeister yesterday did you! lol Liaison has no shot at hitting the board and he is there for Baffert cause in his mind now Bodemeister has to beat 18 not 19 horses...

MONCLOVA galloped out strongly after closing belatedly in her second trip postward May 26, from which the runner-up exited to graduate with a 68 Beyer. The daughter of Queen's Plate winner Niigon is bred to run long, and can break through with the stretchout from six and a half furlongs to a mile and a sixteenth. BE MIND PHIL is returning on short rest off a closing second in her debut, going a mile around one turn on the grass. She has a blend of speed and stamina in her pedigree.
