Kentucky Derby 2017: How the race was run

Always Dreaming gets away cleanly from the gate while to the outside, Irish War Cry veers in causing chain-reaction bumping with McCraken and Classic Empire.

Heading into the first turn, Always Dreaming establishes a spot on the rail inside State of Honor, while Battle of Midway and Irish War Cry stalk on the outside.

Turning for home, Always Dreaming drives to the lead with Irish War Cry in striking position, McCraken and Classic Empire rally widest of all, and Lookin At Lee finds an open lane while hugging the fence.

In deep stretch, 9-2 favorite Always Dreaming decisively pulls clear in the 143rd Derby, ahead of longshots Lookin At Lee and Battle of Midway while Classic Empire, McCraken, and Irish War Cry, all of whom figured prominently in the wagering, struggle home in the sloppy going.

In the winner’s enclosure, Always Dreaming is draped in roses.
