Kentucky Derby 2011 reactions and results.

8:22: Crist: "The winner was best and is obviously a very nice horse to have won at five different tracks over three different types of surfaces in just five career starts. You'd think that the first four finishers are Preakness-bound along with beaten favorite Dialed In (8th), who is still eligible for that goofy Preakness $5 million bonus for having won the Holy Bull and Florida Derby. The Derby winner was sired by one of my favorite turf horses -- Leroidesanimaux ..." Read more »

Recap: Full wrap-up by Jay Privman. "This horse was so powerful today," trainer Graham Motion said. "I didn't know for sure he would handle the switch over to dirt. This is a very special horse." Read more »

7:24: Watchmaker: "Even though he had never raced on dirt before, enough people were impressed with the way Animal Kingdom trained on the dirt here at Churchill Downs that this colt making his first start on a new surface in the Kentucky Derby wasn't quite the concern that it might normally be. But where you really have to hand it to trainer Graham Motion is how he had Animal Kingdom primed for such an explosive winning performance in his first start since winning the Spiral six weeks ago. And make no mistake about it, Animal Kingdom was explosive in the Derby. He was much the best." Read more »

6:00: Crist: "I made a token win bet on my scratched-into Derby 'pick' of Mucho Macho Man, poured myself two fingers of Maker's Mark, and will try to find a couple of Wint-O-Green Life Savers for garnish to call it a julep. Good luck to all and I'll be back after the race." Live blog »

5:45: A record Kentucky Derby crowd of 164,858 was announced by Churchill Downs as the attendance on Saturday for the 137th Derby, beating the previous mark of 163,628, set for the 100th Derby in 1974.

Watchmaker sees hints of a dead rail: "I've had a nagging feeling all day that the rail was not the place to be on the main track, and after the Churchill Downs Stakes (which, by the way, was easily the strongest sprint race so far this year), I have come to believe that to be the case. Yes, I know that in the Churchill Downs Stakes, Aikenite broke from the rail and he got up to nip Apriority, who broke from post three. But both did their best running once they got to the outside." 3:52: Robby Albarado, winning jockey in the Humana Distaff aboard Sassy Image, on losing his Derby mount aboard Animal Kingdom to John Velazquez: Team Valor head Barry Irwin "decided he didn't think I was fit to ride; he didn't know my status or my situation. I'm just glad they thought of me first or all and I'll get plenty of opportunities to ride in the Derby down the road and this just wasn't my time today... I feel better than I look, I know that. It doesn't feel bad at all." Inside Post »

3:42: Steven Crist, weatherman: "Looks like we're going to get lucky with the weather: Just a few sprinkles so far, and the Doppler pictures make it look like Louisville's clear for the rest of the day." Live blog »
