Keeneland September: Medaglia d'Oro colt sells for $1.1 million

A Medaglia d'Oro colt sold for $1.1 million to a partnership as the Keeneland September yearling sale continued with its second session on Tuesday afternoon.

The colt was consigned by Lane's End, as agent. The partnership purchasing him included bloodstock agents Alex Solis and Jason Litt, Gainesway Farm, and Winchell Thoroughbreds.

"I think he was just a standout from our standpoint. We all got together and realized we liked him, so that's why I'm here," said Ron Winchell, adding that the new purchase will begin his racing career with Steve Asmussen. "[The price is] always more than you expect, but we were afraid that was where it was going."

The colt is the first foal out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Kid Kate, a six-time stakes winner and also multiple graded stakes placed over four seasons of racing. The mare is a half-sister to Grade 2-placed stakes winner Amie's Dini.

The colt became the second yearling of Tuesday's second session, and the fourth of the sale overall, to net a seven-figure price tag.

"If you go look at the horse, he's an absolute standout physically," Solis said. "He's got great scope, a great hind leg for Medaglia d'Oro. You're looking for that Medaglia d'Oro that has the length and the size and looks fast, and he looks fast."
