Rahystrada wins the Arlington Handicap for the third time in July.

Rahystrada, the only horse to win the Arlington Handicap three times, has been retired after finishing fifth in an allowance race Thursday at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

Owner Robert Courtney Jr. said he and trainer Scooter Hughes had “decided it’s time to give the horse a good life” in light of the two subpar performances that ended the 9-year-old gelding’s 46-race career. Rahystrada had finished 11th in the Aug. 17 Arlington Million in his previous start.

“It’s been a very humbling, very moving experience to own a horse like this,” Courtney said. “He was loved by many people.”

Based at the Thoroughbred Training Center in Lexington, Rahystrada, a Kentucky-bred by Rahy, won 14 races, the most notable being his victories in the Arlington Handicap in 2010, 2012, and 2013. An earner of $1,383,730, the gelding will live out his days at Courtney’s Stonebridge Farm near Lexington.

kudos to the connections....thinking about it, NYRA should put some of that casino money toward retirement homes. 80K NW allowance races?? NYRA certainly doesn't give a damn about the customer, at least show some concern for the horses....They could easily roll back $500 off each race and earmark it for retired thoroughbreds.....that would be more than a million per annum!

It would not be financially feasible. Are you going to roll back $500 from the low level tracks or do you not care about these thoroughbreds just the big winners

Courtney is a class act; this story reminds me of the excellent piece the TTimes ran on him a couple of years back. Rahystrada: Enjoy the beach. APlattner

Way to go, after seeing Rahystrada win that third Arlington Handicap I always felt that he deserved his retirement after one last attempt at the Million. One of the classiest veterans I've seen in person.

May you have a long, peaceful retirement. You earned it. And kudos to an owner doing the right thing for his horse.
