VINTON, La. - Jet Black Magic pulled a significant upset on Saturday, when she powered to a 4 1/4-length win over 1-5 favorite La Appassionata in the Grade 3, $400,000 Delta Downs Princess. It was another 7 1/4 lengths back in third to Above Fashion.

Jet Black earned $240,000 for the win, and also picked up 10 points toward the Kentucky Oaks in a preference system administered by Churchill Downs. La Appassionata earned four points, with Above Fashion picking up two and Learning Curve, one, after the disqualification of fourth-place finisher Shesthewinner.

The Delta Princess was one of two graded stakes on the card. The Grade 3, $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot was won by Exaggerator ($3.80).

Jet Black Magic ($21.40) settled off the pace in the Princess, advancing along the inside as Shesthewinner and Angelita dueled through fractions of 24.02 seconds for the opening quarter and 49.60 for the half-mile on a track rated muddy. La Appassionata took over from those rivals and was hooked on the final turn by Above Fashion. La Appasionata fought off the challenge, but Jet Black Magic, swinging into the stretch three wide under Roberto Morales, had momentum and overtook that one.

“When he asked her she came running,” said Carl Moore, who owns Jet Black Magic.

Jet Black Magic covered the mile in 1:42.14.

“To have a Louisiana-bred come up and win this race, it’s unbelievable,” said Moore.

Jet Black Magic is a daughter of the Giant’s Causeway stallion Hold Me Back and was bred by Clear Creek Stud in Folsom, La.

Jet Black Magic’s win was one of two stakes victories on the card for Moore and trainer Bret Calhoun, who also teamed to capture the $75,000 Orleans with Mayla. Moore co-owns Mayla with Brad Grady.

Calhoun was pleased to turn the tables on La Appassionata, who defeated Jet Black Magic in the local prep for the Princess, the $100,000 My Trusty Cat. Jet Black Magic was beaten eight lengths in the race run Oct. 23.

“She didn’t get good trip that day, and today was her day,” said Calhoun.

Jet Black Magic has now won 2 of 4 starts with her other career victory coming in a maiden special weight sprint at Indiana Grand.
