Hollywood Park: Zazu to miss Vanity

Email

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Zazu, the winner of three graded stakes, will be withdrawn from Saturday's $250,000 Vanity Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park because she is "off behind," trainer John Sadler said on Thursday afternoon.

"She's out," Sadler said. "We did a preliminary diagnosis with X-rays, which were negative. We'll do a nuclear scan on Tuesday."

A nuclear scan is a more elaborate test, which can detect the presence of more minute injuries than a conventional X-ray.

Zazu was considered a leading contender for the Grade 1 Vanity, the top race of the meeting for older fillies and mares on the main track.

Owned by Jerry and Ann Moss, Zazu, 4, has won 4 of 12 starts and $691,985. A filly by Tapit, she won the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes and Grade 1 Lady's Secret Stakes last year, but did not start in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic at Churchill Downs last fall because of soreness in a shoulder.

Zazu made one start earlier this year, finishing fourth behind Vanity favorite Include Me Out in the Grade 2 Marjorie Everett Handicap here on May 19.

I'm sorry to hear Zazu will not be running in the Vanity. I was looking forward to seeing her again, as it's been awhile since the last time I've seen her. She's not feeling right right now, and it is best to be prudent and rest her, let her heal.

Here we go again, Sadler runner scratched and will run 3 times a year. Unreal how anyone leaves a horse with him.

Dear Mr. Anderson, Zazu, may truly be "off behind", but in my opinion I think's a good reason to give the media, when the real reason might be that he and the Moss's don't want to be beat by Include Me Out again like they were in the Grade II Marjorie Everett Handicap on May 19. I doubt that highly. Sadler and the Mosses have never been known for ducking hard races, i.e. Giacomo in the 2005 Kentucky Derby at 50-1. The Mosses are known for loving and caring for ALL of their horses, not just Zenyatta. If Zazu isn't 100 percent, they won't run her. I'm afraid to say it, but if this proves to be a big issue, they may decide to retire her and get her healed to be bred next season. I would be very sad if this happened as I really like this big, gray filly.

Agree with you on the Mosses not running a horse that is injured - they do take good care of all of their horses, but J. Shirrefs, not J. Sadler, trained Giacomo.
