Hips to watch at Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale

The following are horses to watch at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale of select 2-year-olds in training, based on their pedigrees and past auction performance, both their own and notable family members. Pre-sale under-tack show performance, conformation, physical characteristics, veterinarian records, and late pedigree updates were not taken into consideration. Selections were made before outs were announced.

Hip No. 15, ch. f., Tapit—Above Heaven, by Mr. Greeley, consigned by Kings Equine, agent

Her third dam is Broodmare of the Year Oatsee, putting her in the family of Preakness Stakes winner Shackleford, Grade 1-winning second dam Lady Joanne, and Grade 2 winner Afleeting Lady. She was a $380,000 buyback at last year’s Keeneland September yearling sale.

Hip No. 36, gr. or ro. f., Eskendereya—Champagne Royale, by French Deputy, consigned by Kings Equine, agent

A half-sister to Grade 1 winners Majestic Harbor and Danza. Her dam, stakes-placed Champagne Royale, sold with this filly in utero for $825,000 at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall select mixed sale.

Hip No. 38, gr. or ro. c., Tapit—Christmas Star, by Star de Naskra, property of Hoby & Layna Kight

Christmas Star’s eight winners from nine runners includes Grade 1 winner Cuvee, Grade 2 winner Will He Shine, Grade 3-placed Harpoon, and three additional stakes-placed runners. Grade 1 winners Olympio and Pyro are in the extended family.

Hip No. 40, dk. b. or br. f., Scat Daddy—Classic Strike, by Smart Strike, consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds, agent

Grade 2 winner Handsome Mike is a full brother to this filly, while her half-siblings include Grade 1 winner Union Strike and stakes-placed Classic Sense. The filly was a $450,000 RNA at the Keeneland September sale and brought $270,000 as a weanling.

Hip No. 48, b. c., Curlin—Dress the Part, by Malibu Moon, consigned by William B. Harrigan, agent

The first foal out of stakes winner Dress the Part, from the family of Grade 2 winner Onlyforyou. He sold for $240,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale.

Hip No. 57, b. f., Uncle Mo—Flowers Athefinish, by Grand Reward, consigned by Cary Frommer, agent

A full sister to multiple-stakes-placed Mighty Mo, from the family of Australian Group 1 winner Moriarty. She brought $250,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale.

Hip No. 59, ch. c., Curlin—Franscat, by Stormin Fever, consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds, agent

Franscat’s seven foals to race are all winners, including stakes winners Swinger’s Party and Hubba Shake and Grade 3-placed Powhatan County. This colt topped last year’s Fasig-Tipton July sale at $475,000.

A $475,000 purchase out of last year’s Keeneland September sale. This colt’s third dam is champion Personal Ensign, putting him in the family of Broodmare of the Year Personal Flag; champion Storm Flag Flying; Grade 1 winners My Flag, Miner’s Mark, Traditionally, and Mr Speaker; Grade 2 winners Parading and Interactif; and Grade 3 winners Animal Spirits, Divine Oath, and Ocho Ocho Ocho.

Hip No. 76, ch. c., Malibu Moon—I’m Breathtaking, by Elusive Quality, consigned by Wavertree Stables Inc., agent

This colt is a full brother to Grade 2-placed stakes winner Matador and a half to stakes-placed My Cousin Martha. Further down the page are Grade 1 winners New Year’s Day and Shared Account and Grade 2 winners Pok Ta Pok, Justwhistledixie, Mohaymen, Sapphire n’ Silk, and Shaniko.

A full brother to Grade 1 winner Sweet Loretta, from the family of Canadian champion Spring in the Air, Grade 1 winner Palace Episode, and Grade 2 winner Tejano Run. She was the second-most-expensive horse of last year’s Fasig-Tipton July sale at $450,000.

Grade 2 winner Katz Me If You Can’s four winners from six runners includes graded stakes producers Unkatzable and This Cat Can Dance. The colt sold for $280,000 at the Keeneland September sale.

Hip No. 87, b. c., Awesome Again—Kiss the Lady, by Quiet American, consigned by Eddie Woods, agent

The second foal out of stakes-placed Kiss the Lady, he brought $400,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. The page features Irish champion Minstrella and Grade 2 winners A Little Warm, Mini Sermon, Colonial Minstrel, and Blofeld.

Hip No. 90, Fiftyshadesoftapit, ch, c, Tapit—Lady of Fifty, by After Market, consigned by Wavertree Stables Inc., agent

The first foal out of Grade 1 winner Lady of Fifty. He was a $625,000 buyback at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale, giving him the highest yearling hammer price of the Gulfstream sale catalog.

Hip No. 92, b. c., Giant’s Causeway—Leaveminthedust, by Danzig, consigned by Wavertree Stables Inc., agent

All five runners out of Leaveminthe-dust are winners, including Grade 1-placed Danzig Moon and Canadian classic-placed Leavem In Malibu. Champions Inside Information and Smuggler and Grade 1/Group 1 winners Quick as Lightning, Educated Risk, Hot Cha Cha and Evilasio are in the female family.

A full sister to French Group 3-placed Omar Bradley, from the family of Group 1 winners Loup Sauvage and Loup Solitaire, as well as Grade 2 winner Loup Breton. She was a $180,000 RNA at last year’s Keeneland September sale.

The first Frankel foal to be offered at a North American 2-year-old auction sold as a yearling in France for $457,683. He is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Marbre Rose, from the family of Grade 1 winners Zoftig, Zaftig, and Zo Impressive.

Grade 1 winner Weemissfrankie and Grade 2-placed Stop Smiling are half-siblings to this filly, who was a $310,000 Keeneland September purchase. The extended family includes Grade 1 winner Stormy Pick.
